bepresentflyersecondweekend
***WE ARE OPENING A SECOND WEEKEND***

Join me in beautiful Castle Rock, Colorado on June 2-3, 2017 for a two day art workshop.

Our studio is light filled and surrounded by wooded property that lends itself to exploring, creating and relaxing.

You will have opportunities during the workshop to also make your way through some of our wooded paths and find a spot to create.

It is our heart’s desire that your time on our land and studio brings you rest and dreaming.

When you arrive on Friday morning you will be welcomed with mimosas and a light snack as we find our places and meet each other.

All main supplies will be provided for this workshop.

Our day will be filled with art prompts and techniques to help us all be present and connect with our worlds daily through our creativity. We will create our own journals using rust dyed fabric, watercolor paper, vintage ephemera, stitching and more. We will practice contour sketching and watercolor techniques, stamp carving and mark making to create abstract and realistic images.

Each day there will also be time spent in the beautiful land surrounding the studio including our lunch time in the garden.

At the end of day one I hope you will join me for dinner at one of my favorite local restaurants (this is not included) or explore our sweet town and find the perfect place to relax after a full day of creating.

|Some of the women at my last art workshop in our front yard|

Day two will be filled with more creating as we take some of our smaller works of art and create one larger abstract painting incorporating our painting, mark making, vintage ephemera and stitching.

You will leave this two day workshop with a journal full of your work, new possibilities in your art and hopefully a new eye to the ways you can connect more with the world around you.

Our time will end with cocktails and appetizers as we say our goodbyes.

While you are in the area we will make sure to point you in the right direction to all of our favorite restaurants, hiking spots and antique stores.

Our town has been ranked one of the best towns in America and we have to agree. I suggest you stay a few extra days to enjoy the beauty of Colorado!

Space is limited. If you have any questions please email us at contact@jeanneoliverdesigns.com.

You can register below or request an invoice.

Paint Splattered Gift Wrapping | Artsy and Easy

This is the final post for me with all of the incredible ladies that are a part of the Farmhouse Holiday Series!

This series has been over the past few months and it has been so much fun and I have loved sharing our new home in a more intentional way.

These ladies are all full time design and DIY bloggers and it has been such a huge honor to be included.

I would just like to thank Kristen of Ella Claire for the lavishing invitation to be a part of the series.

Today we are all sharing holiday gift wrap ideas.

This won’t come as a surprise to you but I threw some paint on mine:-)

I got the boxes, ribbons, bells and animal ornaments from Target and then with three different paintbrush sizes I splattered white craft paint onto the packages.

I think wrapping for our family is almost as much fun as finding the gift.

Whatever is easy, affordable and fun is the perfect way to wrap all of your gifts.

Include the kids because they are usually the most creative in our family with their fun artwork and homemade newspaper bows.

Have the most beautiful Christmas!

If you would like to see the studio dressed up for Christmas click HERE.

We have created a small gift below of gift tags and a poster that perfectly proclaims how my heart feels about the gift of Christ.

Please download your free tags and print and share with those you love.

Merry Christmas!

Studio Christmas Tour

I had hoped to get the studio simply decorated for Christmas in time for our Holiday House Walk Tour earlier this week but that just didn’t happen so we are sharing it now.

We are loving this space so much and what it means for me but also Kelly and the kids.

This is where I create, have meeting with our creative team members, meet with clients, read, study, tinker, have cocktails or coffee with Kelly and hang out with the kids.

It has just become an incredibly fun extension of our home.

I don’t like to get too fussy with the holidays and decorating and I believe less is more.

Welcome to the studio!

Thank you for coming on over to the studio and if you would like to see more images of the studio I recommend the following posts…

Business Consulting and Private Art Instructions Openings for 2017

We are opening up our calendar to start scheduling business consults and private art instruction in 2017.

This has been one of the most rewarding aspects of the new studio because it has allowed us to connect in brand new ways.

Over the past year I have consulted with businesses owners from all over the world and have helped them make a plan to grow their business, get back on track or get off the ground.

Running your own business is one of the hardest things you will ever do but it is also one of the most rewarding.  If you feel stuck in your business, not sure how to navigate social media, don’t know how to focus and move forward or you just need another creative to brainstorm with you then I would love to talk with you. You can choose a one hour session or meet weekly/monthly. We will talk through Skype so we see each other and create a genuine relationship as we work together.

There are few things I do that give me as much joy as connecting with other creative business owners and sharing what we have learned.

If you would like to schedule a consult please email us at contact@jeanneoliverdesigns.com.

***

I love teaching online and also in live workshops but sometimes the best use of your time and resources can be private one on one instruction.

I meet with artists in our studio and it can be a one time instruction, monthly or you can travel and we can schedule it for a full day or weekend.

If you are interested in scheduling private art instruction please email us at contact@jeanneoliverdesigns.com

Because of our own new beautiful studio here in Castle Rock, Colorado I am only traveling to one studio in 2017 and it is to teach in North Caroline at the Donna Downey Studios

The most beautiful and inspiring gift to yourself to start off 2017!

Coming together and creating one on one with other artists is one of my favorite things. I have three children at home and my heart is to be with them so it is only the most special studios and opportunities that bring me away from my own studio.

In person I am able to connect in a whole different way than online and we are able to work one on one on your art and even where you want your art to go. The intimacy that a live workshop offers is priceless to me and I hear that back from other artists also. It is always a growth experience for each artist teaching and the artists gathering together.

This coming February I will be traveling to North Carolina to teach at the Donna Downey Studios! This is such a treat for me to be at Donna’s studio but to also be teaching along the East Coast! I know I get asked often to make my way to the East Coast so I hope this makes many of you happy!

THREE DAYS of us sketching, laughing, connecting, sculpting and going away filled up and ready to take what we have learned and discovered about ourselves and investing it into our own work. I love this part of live workshops! I just walk away filled up and inspired in my own creativity! I hope you join me!

You can make payments (hello!) and start your 2017 with a creative gift for yourself!

Join me for a three-day workshop all about finding your authentic style and incorporating your story into your work. Our first day together will be filled with some of my favorite sketching exercises and techniques. We will play with charcoal, inks, watercolor pencils, pastels, paints and more. At the end of the first day you will be surrounded by your portrait sketches and collages and your own story will start to be revealed.

With our other days together we will create sculptures based upon your sketches. You will build your own industrial armatures and I will share easy to follow steps to sculpting your own face. We will embellish our sculptures with plaster and wire to create works of art you will be proud of.

Playing Big Abstract Painting Class
Is there something keeping you from playing big in your painting? Are you wanting to push through creative blocks and create the kind of art you see in your dreams? Then join us for Playing Big Abstract Painting Class.
This last year I noticed that there was a real disconnect in the art that I was making and the art I really wanted to make. For whatever reason, I just wasn’t painting what I really wanted to paint. So I gave myself permission to really play big! This class is all about taking big risks and putting it all out there. No holding back!!! Working on a large piece of watercolor paper, we will explore color, mark making, style and composition. Get lost in the process and create with abandon.
  • Gather inspiration for color palettes that fit your art personality.
  • Create your own style and color boards to draw on for inspiration.
  • Explore your very own abstract painting style by looking at some of your favorite abstract painters.
  • Create dimension in your piece by layering shapes and colors with watercolors and acrylic paints.
  • Discuss composition and how to balance your abstract pieces.
  • Work through creative blocks keeping you back from your most authentic work.
  • Make marks and lines to finish off your pieces.
  • Embrace the process of creating and find what brings you joy in painting to take home to your daily creative practice.

Materials:
  • 4-5 sheets of large watercolor paper (Strathmore 140 lb Watercolor paper 18 x 24)
  • Large shipping tube to carry your paper (must be 20 inches at least)
  • artist grade watercolor set

This coming Monday you can join loved artist Julie Johnson online for her newest course Painterly Portraits!

I am smiling from ear to ear to share that one of our most popular teachers is back with a brand new online course! Join us for Painterly Portraits: A Study in Acrylics and Oils with Julie Johnson!

Painterly Portraits Course Trailer

I encourage you to come along with me if you want to learn to paint. You will learn to paint from your heart, Do you feel like you are missing something? It’s not about talent. It is about applying your love of something that you know is in you. I will help you discover that inner passion of art that has begun to come out in you or you have just realized this is something you would love to discover. Know each of us will have a beautiful and different outcome. You will be loved as I walk along side you. I will break down every step, show you my palette as I paint and see me mixing colors then laying that color down.
I am a artist who loves realism. It’s where I first started as an artist in art college studying illustration. It is important to gain the fundamentals that will make your art strong and loved by others. With those fundamentals we can play!

Playtime with painting is getting loose with our edges, finding texture, light and darks. A beautiful thing will happen, you will find emotion without even trying.
Here are some of the exciting things we will find as we come to the easel.
* The energy from a stroke of paint from our brushstroke.
* Color, tone and mixing colors.
* How to lay down our paint.
* Transparency and opaqueness
* How to find a painterly style
* Loose edges.
* Why I need strong shapes to help my composition.
* How do I sketch with paint?
* Can I create a acute likeness?
* What is a indirect and direct method of painting.
* We will study Portraiture
* How to work from a photograph.

* We will breakdown the face into shapes and planes.

This 7+ hours of content class will be begin on October 24, 2016 and you will have lifetime* access to the class.

The registration price for Painterly Portraits: A Study in Acrylics and Oils is $48.00.

Supply list

Here is my list. We will be using mostly paint. Please read though and know you can substitute and use what you have on hand. I don’t want you to have to purchase a lot of supplies. We will be mixing our own blacks.
You have the opportunity to use all acrylic for each lesson or all oils. All lessons are interchangeable with what medium you choose.
I will be doing my best to use the same color palettes for both the acrylic and oil paints. It is important to get accustomed to mixing a color palette we will use. During playtime we may venture into new mixtures.
Acrylic paint supplies
Here is my list of colors. You may substitute brands. Please stay away from: the craft paints as they chalky, full of fillers and don’t have much pigment in them, also avoid anything with the word HUE behind them they are a imitation paint and will not mix good color results..leaving you with mud. I will go back and forth using both heavy body and fluid colors, but you can use either heavy or fluid or both.
Here are my heavy body paint colors from Golden Brand:
Titanium White
Cadmium Yellow Light
Cadmium Yellow Medium
Cadmium Red Medium
Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold ( or the fluid )
Golden Fluid
Napthol Red Light
Anthraquinone Blue (I combine this with other colors to get the kings blue i use in oils)
Ultramarine Blue
Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold
Liquitex
Indanthrene Blue
I am a lover of the flat brush. 1.5”, 1” size or 1/2”. I always find them in my hand. I can change the edges and get the wide edge then the thinner edge. But you can use what you like. I will be encouraging you to always use a larger brush. The results; a more painterly painting.
I realize paints can be expensive but I believe it is best to practice with the best materials we can so we don’t get frustrated and give up. It doesn’t have to be hard. Think in terms of a piano that is in tune or out of tune.
Oil Paint Supply list
Here are the colors and brands I use. You do not need to use my brands. There are a lot of yellows and reds out there and the all mix a little differently but it totally ok to use different brands. There are a couple of colors that I find you need in mixing colors. I will asterisk them **. Please stay away from false colors that have the word “Hue” behind them. They are full of fillers and not much pigment. You will not mix a true color and end up with muddy colors. Also know that The student grade “WINTON” on Windsor and Newton brand is mostly filler and little pure pigment…..yes the muddy colors again. Please use the 40%coupon at Hobby Lobby. They carry the Windsor Newton brand.
Paint colors for oils
Windsor Newton Brand
Titanium White
Cadmium Yellow Light
Cadmium Yellow
Cadmium Red
**Cadmium Scarlet
**Alizarin Crimson Permanent
**Permanent Mauve
Rembrandt Brand:
Ultramarine Deep ( i use instead of ultramarine blue but you can use the ultramarine blue)
**Transparent Oxide Red
Viridian Green
Transparent Oxide Yellow
Sennelier
** King’s Blue
Palette knifes
some kind of container for turp. I recommend;
Gamsol a 100% pure odorless mineral spirits. The least toxic. The only thing I use to clean my brushes.
Viva towels the most absorbent and the paint doesn’t get all over my hands.
I prefer a glass palette. But you can use whatever you like. I got mine from a consignment store I use in a picture frame.
Brushes:
Again I love flats. I use Rosemary and Co Brushes. The Michelle Dunaway set. http://www.rosemaryandco.com/
If you get this set you will have everything you will need. Brushes are like the reed to a clarinet. They take a lot of the work of painting. I will put together my favorite list for you.
Substrates
Here you have a diverse group of choices. You can choose so many different surfaces from a smooth portrait grade linen by Ray Mar, to a gessoed primed birch cradle panel. I have been staying away from the canvas panels you will find at your hobby Lobby or Michaels store. Why, because they pull at my paint making painting hard. I could still use them if I coated them with gesso and sanded them 3x’s. I have fallen in love with the cradle boards and linen. I don’t use linen often, but when I do it always gives me goose bumps because its simply divine. Pick out any size you would like to work on. I will go into more on substrates in the class.
If you have questions please ask.
