Last 24 Hours For Early Registration for Tracy Verdugo’s Animal Antics

I wanted to remind you that you have 24 hours left to get the early registration price for Tracy Verdugo’s Animal Antics on our creative network!  Tracy has inspired thousands to step out of their comfort zone and to walk them through the creative process with ease.  She has even inspired one of my favorite authors Elizabeth Gilbert!  I love that!

Tracy cut back on her travel schedule as she focused on her body as she was healing through cancer.  We love that Tracy is taking this much needed time to heal and that she is allowing more of us to connect with her art and teaching online.  This is such a treat to have Tracy here on our site and I know you will adore her, her art and her teaching style.

I think we can all agree that animals bring a deep richness to the human experience. Whether it’s the healing gift of a warm, purring kitty, the unconditional, exuberant love, waggily tail and smiling eyes of a puppy or the deep wild, wisdom of a majestic horse, animals speak to me in a myriad of ways, and I ALWAYS have something to learn in my encounters with them.

Please join Tracy for this one week class where we will find inspiration from our animal friends, explore techniques and creative processes to expand our imaginative approach to art, and play with acrylic inks, acrylics, pastels, charcoal, collage and more to create multiple works on both paper and board.

Together we will explore ways to find inspiration for our animal themed art, methods to create a narrative within our work and ways to connect with our audience by using our own experience and stories.

We will look at the value of quirky imperfect little animal characters and the messages they can convey and I will share with you the value of working in series and how I have developed that in my own practice.

We will do all of this together in lashes of vibrant color and loose gesture, and as always in my classes and art, seeking the magic that comes when you allow yourself to be free of self judgment and comparison, open to happy accidents, and smack, bang in the middle of flow and possibility!

Come and watch the course trailer!

The early registration price is $32 and it will end at 5pm MST on February 21, 2017. To register or to read more click HERE.

Documented Life Project FREE Video 2016 |All About the Gold!

I am so honored to be back as a featured artist with the Documented Life Project 2016.

I would like to give a little full discloser that I obviously don’t read instructions and I totally missed my assignment. For real!

It is midnight here and I am seeing for the first time that it was suppose to be simple and small. This is awkward.

My husband does all of my video edits, uploading etc. so you can imagine his eye rolling just now when he heard how short this was suppose to be and how easy his job should have been!

I hope you will just forget for a moment what I was supposed to do!

Do I get any points for getting one last project in for the year and actually getting it accomplished before the holidays?

I love you all and thank you for all the amazing women over at Art to the 5th for inspiring and encouraging so many!

Here is to 2017 and adding a little more gold to all of the beauty that we all create!

Let’s now pretend I can follow instructions…

Gorgeous Work Being Created in Paint Your Town!

I would love to take a moment to share the gorgeous work being created in my online course Paint Your Town: Mixed Media Urban Landscapes. It is truly blowing me away!

It is never my intention to teach other artists how to create art like me but to take techniques and make them their own.  The artists in this course are doing just that!

I am so moved by how they took techniques and prompts and then with connecting with their world they made them their own. The most beautiful part is how they are all showing up and capturing the life in front of them! Bravo!

The heart behind this course was to encourage other creatives to not wait for a special trip or an art retreat to connect with the world around them. When I reflected on some of my favorite artists the truth was that they may have been inspired by a special trip or an art friend but the body of their work was created by PAINTING THEIR TOWN, THEIR FRIENDS, THEIR HOMES, THEMSELVES! Isn’t that encouraging and inspiring!

Come and get a GLIMPSE into the art being created within the online workshop by the students…

Paint Your Town: Mixed Media Urban Landscapes Course Trailer

Here is peek into the content of the course…

Sometimes we get to be wild explorers and travel far away, other times we can connect with other creatives not far from home and at other times we have the joy of hunkering down right where we live and creating among our day to day life.  Each one of these are life giving and creative building travels.

I love that my travels have allowed me to build beautiful new friendships, sketch among stained glass windows and old wooden pews, sip espresso as I watch the locals pass me by and learn to get out of my comfort zone and create wherever I go.

I also love that it has taught me to find the beauty in the ordinary and familiar. This is the practice that has grown me most as an artist and has allowed me to practice daily.

In Paint Your Town | Mixed Media Urban Landscapes we will become tourists in our own towns and open our eyes to the photography, sketching, architecture, people, cafes, painting, connecting, history and beauty right in front of us.

In this class we will create abstract landscapes, work with sketching and watercolors, collage, image transfers, charcoal sketches and create mini works of art to create our own Paint Your Town journals when we are done.

The heart behind my art and classes is to encourage practice, use what you have and to create wherever you go. I hope you will join me!  This will be the fall that your town becomes your favorite travel destination!

This online art workshop has over 20 videos, 7 1/2 hours worth of content and lifetime* access to the content.

Paint Your Town: Mixed Media Urban Landscapes

I have been working on a very special project for awhile now and I am so excited to tell you about it.

When I came up with the idea of The Living Studio it was based upon the idea and belief that the whole world should be our studio.

Early Registration Price Ends Today {Studying Under the Masters for Kids!}

***TODAY is the last day to get the early registration price of $38 for this THREE WEEK online course for kids***

Whether your kids are in school full time or you homeschool your children…THIS online course will be a beautiful source of creating and learning!

For children, art isn’t about rules and critiques. Art for kids is about expression and creating and fun! Creating art with kids is like opening the most fantastic Pandora ’s Box of possibilities. You never know how they will express themselves through art. Going back years and years to some of the most beloved Masters of art is a great way to intrigue children about different forms of art, different styles and different mediums. When young people used to aspire to be artists, they would take on the apprenticeship role under Masters of art. I want your kids (and you!) to come along with me and become apprentices to some of art’s Masters!

Studying Under the Masters for Kids was created to teach children about art, history, techniques, and how to learn from and be inspired by great artists. In this three-week course, we will visit three artists who created art in different time periods and places on the map.

Come and read more about this course that will begin on September 19, 2016 and will be lead by Alicia Hutchinson.

Take a peek at just SOME of the gorgeous projects…

We’ll go to Japan and learn from Katsushika Hokusai and his use of woodblock prints, how he could magically capture the movement of water, and study his beautiful landscapes.

We’ll travel to Switzerland and study about Paul Klee. We’ll learn from his love of color theory, mixing mediums, and how his geometric shapes took on fluid movement.

And we’ll explore Austria and the great Gustav Klimt. We’ll study his most famous paintings, learn about his love of shapes and mosaics, and how one of his favorite mediums to work with was quite extravagant!

Each week, you’ll learn about a different artist. A video will introduce the artist, show many pieces of art by him, and we’ll learn some interesting trivia along the way too. After we’ve learned a bit about the Master, you’ll watch another video about that artist’s famed technique—printing, watercolors, mosaics, and more. When your child has gotten a grasp for the techniques we’ll move into the fun stuff—the projects! We’ll create lots of beautiful pieces of art inspired by our teachers—art to hang on the wall, to decorate with and even to wear!

Ways To Use this Course:

  • Invite the kids’ friends over and have an “Art Week.” Choose one of the artists and create art all week with your friends!
  • Use as a unit study. Check out books from the library, go online and watch videos and fully immerse yourself into the life of the great artist. When you’re creating art like him, you’ll have such a personal experience!
  • Use in your homeschool for a month or more of art classes.
  • Create a wonderful one-on-one time with your art-loving child and create art together—make it a special date!

Who is this Course for?

Art should be enjoyed at all ages, but because this course goes pretty in-depth about the lives of artists and their specific techniques, it’s probably geared more towards older kids. My suggestion would be ages 7-12. We will be using supplies at times that won’t be suitable for little, tiny hands. If you have younger kids, you can always get them their own box of art supplies and they can create with their own supplies near you. Having both boys and girls myself, I try to be sensitive to not making our art projects too girlie. I was conscious of this when creating this course and it is definitely suitable for boys and girls alike. There is one project where we will be creating jewelry, but this would be a great gift for Mama or your son could make a more “masculine” version of the project.

What will I get with this course?

When you sign up to take this course, you’ll be receiving lifetime access to all the video content—over 7 hours. You’ll get a Student Notebook with information about each artist, spaces to take notes, book lists, art supply lists, and more. You’ll receive video content on many great art projects, tips on storing kids’ art, and videos on help with creating art with kids—even if it’s not your strong suit!

I so hope you will join us in Studying Under the Masters for Kids! It was a blast to create and I can’t wait to see what your children come up with! See you in class

Today I had five children and three adults exploring our land. We were gathering flowers, branches and leaves.  The kids were finding the perfect walking sticks.  Every place we turned we found something new.  We then came back to the studio and the kids made maps of the land and also painted or sketched some of the treasures they found out on the land.  Inside I was beaming. It was the whole reason I wanted this land. I wanted a place to gather!  A place to explore, make art and be present.  Just simply connecting with what is around us is an honor and dream for me. It is something that we can do anywhere but on this new land of ours if feels so much easier and natural.

After our exploring on our land today I am even more excited to announce the next live workshop in our studio!  I would love for you to come join me on our land for a two day workshop this fall as we explore and paint with Michelle Wooderson.

Field Guide: A Nature Inspired Sketchbook

John Muir said, “The mountains are calling and I must go.” I feel that same calling to the mountains and am so thankful to be able to visit them every year. If you have a calling to get back to nature then this class is for you. We will venture to Jeanne’s beautiful home in Colorado to study the mountains and nature while creating beautiful artwork. It sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?

In this two day class, we will learn to improve our drawing skills by sketching pieces of nature. We’ll begin inside and sketch beautiful nature inspired centerpieces. Becoming better at drawing helps every other aspect of our art. We’ll study simple line and contour sketches and learn how to compose a scene quickly. Capturing the essence of the scene in a timely manner lends us more time to add paint and move on to the next sketch.

We’ll then dive into studying watercolor landscape sketches. We’ll touch on atmospheric perspective and how to make our sketches look realistic with foreground, middle ground and background objects. To prepare for outdoor sketching, we’ll develop a color palette, using nature’s beauty as our guide. Value is so important in our art so we’ll work with composition and value sketches. We’ll develop brush strokes and marking suitable for painting nature. We all probably have some other art supplies in our stash too, so we’ll visit some mixed media techniques that meld beautifully with watercolor. We’ll work with gesso, charcoal, vintage papers, inks, pastels and more.

To prepare for en plein air painting, or painting outside, we’ll learn how to set up a travel watercolor palette and outdoor sketching kit. We’ll discuss the supplies needed and packing it all up with ease. I’ll show you some of my watercolor palettes and travel sketching kits and some of my favorite bags I use.

While in beautiful Colorado, this will be the perfect time to develop an artist’s mentality that puts us in a wonderful mindset of needing to paint daily, practice often and to make creating art a habit. We’ll learn that each sketch is practice for the next sketch and that practice is art. Gathering with a community of like minded people can be so uplifting and inspiring. We’ll share where we are in our journey and where we plan to be one year from now. This might just be our favorite part…sharing in the journey with others.

All of our practice lessons will prepare us to take out sketchbooks outside to Jeanne’s beautiful, wooded property full of trees and mountain views. We’ll create a simple, no sew watercolor field journal that will house all of our beautiful sketches. It will become a wonderful resource and beautiful piece of art that you will take home to treasure forever. Each student will receive a fun goody bag filled with items to inspire your art.

If you’ve wanted to travel and create art at the same time, this class is calling your name. Getting back to nature, creating art inspired by our beautiful Earth and being surrounded with artistic souls sounds like a little piece of heaven to me. I hope you will join me in this exciting journey to beautiful Colorado.

If you are curious, you do not have to take my Close To Home: A Watercolor Landscape Journey class to sign up for this class. However, the lessons studied in that class could help you jump start the Field Guide: A Nature Inspired Sketchbook class. Watching the videos will help you with practicing some before class starts and you can learn more about supplies and setting up your travel kit.

(Revised)Class Supply List for Field Guide: A Nature Inspired Sketchbook

Watercolor Palette suitable and already prepared for taking outdoors to paint. Folding metal or plastic palettes are a good choice.  12-24 paint colors of professional artist tubes are suggested.  You can view my 24 palette colors and how to set up a palette in the supply list of my Close To Home: A Watercolor Landscape Journey. You will need to prepare your palette and allow 24-48 hours for the paints to dry.  For a less expensive choice, the craft stores offer ready to go palettes for around $20 or less.

Small Spray Bottle-to rewet your paint palette. I get mine from the travel section at Walmart or Target.

Watercolor Brushes-I suggest good quality brushes in a size 8 or 10 round, a ½” flat brush and a size 0-2 rigger brush. If you’re just experimenting with this class, then an inexpensive size 8 round brush will work just fine.

Travel Water Cup-You can bring an old butter tub or look for collapsible water cups at art stores or online.  There are several styles to choose from.

Pencils for sketching-Suggested are a mechanical pencil with refill leads, .05 or.07 lead.  Regular lead pencils with an assortment of leads would be nice for value sketches.  You can purchase a small set online at places like Blick Art Materials. Lead ranges from H’s, HB and B’s are nice.  A regular school pencil will work too for all the lessons.

Charcoal Pencil-I like the kind where you can peel off the paper to reveal the charcoal. This is optional as a regular school pencil will work also.

Eraser-Kneaded or white

Watercolor Pad-This will be for practice lessons.  Select a size you can travel with easily, like 8 x 10 or smaller.   300 gsm, 140 lb, cold press spiral pads can be found inexpensively at craft stores, online or Walmart. Use your coupon.

Ink Pens-Optional, but if you like to work with ink for sketching then bring one along.  I like my Carbon Platinum Fountain Pen.  Search online and get some waterproof refill cartridges.  You want to use waterproof ink because we’ll be adding watercolor washes.  Lamy Fountain Pens and disposable Micron ink pens with various pen tips are other options.

Sketching Bag-You will need a bag that you can take outdoors and will be packed with sketching supplies.  Messenger bags have long straps that you can use to work hands free.  Also look for hiking backpacks or purses with pockets and dividers.  Camera bags have divided sections and lots of room.  Select something light weight and that you don’t mind setting down in the dirt. An old school backpack will work.

Pen and Paper Pad-Just in case you are a note taker.  Or want Jeanne’s autograph.

Attire for being outdoors-Prepare to spend some time outdoors, weather permitting. Dress casually and be prepared for Colorado weather the week of our trip.  Jeans and tennis shoes are fine.  Other items include jacket and clothing in layers like vests, hat/visor, sunscreen. We can inquire with Jeanne about what the weather will be like the week of our travel.  I am totally casual so don’t get dressed up for me.  J

Camera-A small camera or phone camera is not necessary but might be nice for capturing photos you can work on when you get back home.  Having photos is nice because you can use them as references for future paintings or print them off to work inside when the weather isn’t cooperating.

Other supplies needed for our lessons will be provided for you . Please keep your supplies simple and use what you have.  We want to focus on the lessons and learning, so any additional supplies are not necessary.  If you are taking the class with a buddy, feel free to share supplies where possible.
