Women of Advent | It Begins On Monday!

***Women of Advent will begin on Monday, November 20, 2017***

Come and watch the first sneak peeks into the actual video content of the course…

Sheila Atchley had such a desire to create something extra special for us this holiday season and she has brought to life The Women of Advent.

If the holiday season leaves you feeling a little scattered, you have come to the gathering-place. Come join a community of scattered-gathered hearts. Let’s slow down this season.

“Unfulfilled and fulfilled promise are related to each other, as are dawn and sunrise. Both are promise, and are in fact the same promise.” ~Karl Barth

The Women of Advent

Advent, in its simplest definition, means “to wait”. Each of us is waiting-with-an-ache for something; we are all waiting on a promise, on a dream to be fulfilled, waiting on a clean bill of health, a clear conscience, a mate, or a prodigal child to come home. To wait is to be human. To wait is to be. I want to unleash an army of women (and men) whose metric is grace. To wait is one thing – to wait with a well soul is THE one thing each of us needs most.

If you have ever wondered about the wonder of “Advent”, what it means, and who the season is for (hint: it isn’t just for the liturgical church!), this class is for you. If “the holidays” sometimes leave you feeling a little scattered, this class is for you. If your favorite thing to sketch or paint is faces, this class is for you. If your biggest nemesis is sketching or painting faces, this class is for you.

I’d love to invite you into a different experience this Advent. “The Women of Advent” offers four weeks of art instruction focused on sketching and painting the face. I will share some of my best tricks and tips with you! “The Women of Advent” also includes four weeks of soul-stirring devotional content, centered around the study of the four Old Testament women found in the genealogy of Christ.

All of it, art and devotional content, is designed to help you celebrate what I hope is the most meaningful Advent/Christmas season in recent memory.

So if the holiday season leaves you feeling a little scattered, you have come to the gathering-place. Come join a community of scattered-gathered hearts. Let’s slow down this season, and celebrate our Good…Great…Gathering God.

Stephanie Lee has created an INSTANT mini-course, Inquire Within,  just for all of you that could not make it to our studio! She is so awesome!

That means right this second you can sign-up and start learning her techniques for encaustic art!

In this workshop, you will build up a foundation of plaster, paint, and collage. You will then use the humble materials you have at hand to explore color and shape, light and shadow, and story-telling through imagery and mark making.

You will start with exploring substrates for the best foundation and then follow with creating studies in texture and colored surfaces ready to receive paint. Mindfully working with and against the materials to create dynamic compositions, you’ll employ the power of personal inquiry to invite your singular creative voice to show up with courage and clarity.

All this plaster and paint expression will be finished with luminous layers of wax that you will texture further for depth that can’t be achieved any other way. When you have completed your pieces as you follow along, you will have created luminous, visual stories of wonder and mystery.

Expressive Portraits Workshop with Kate Thompson

I love to push mixed media to its limit. The past several years through fearless experimenting I have discovered some very cool and mysterious techniques that I would love to share with you!

I will show you everything I know about working with linseed oil, graphite, and charcoal as well as watercolors, charcoal, acrylics, gesso and plaster (joint compound). Drawing with a pencil as well as a needle, thread, and wire. These techniques will be demonstrated and incorporated into our final pieces. That is just the start of it. We will also work on collage using vintage book pages and image transfer techniques.  A sample book will be created to build a vocabulary of marks, textures, and techniques to add to our toolkit.

Not only are the mediums unconventional but the substrates are as well. We will work on watercolor paper, vintage ledger paper, vintage fabrics, and laces (check the vintage stores for a source of amazing fabrics to use). Joint compound (pre-mixed plaster) will be added to create depth and texture.

I will demonstrate my portrait techniques that work so well with the mediums we will be using. The emphasis is on expression and texture.

What is included

-two-day art instruction with Kate Thompson

-welcome mimosas and a light snack

-beautiful lunch each day

-afternoon dessert

-a light-filled studio with plenty of room to create

Art Journal It Out | It Begins On Monday!

***Art Journal It Out Will Launch On November 6th at 9am MST***

Carrying my artist’s journal around with me wherever I go and finding new ways to capture and tell the stories that surround me has become one of my sweetest art journeys. Art journaling has given me a fun and easy way to PRACTICE and in turn, change my art. I am honored to tell you that art journaling artist Brittany Soucy has created an art journaling course just for us! Welcome to the registration of Art Journal It Out!

Come and watch a peek into the course content…

Art Journal It Out

In this course, we will be art journaling.  I will be using a plethora of art supplies and explain how I use these supplies while discussing composition and mixed media techniques. I will demonstrate some portraiture and will teach you different ways I approach this in my art
journal. We will work on several spreads so you can try different styles and find new ways of growing your art skills.

We will go into each spread by layering handwriting with paint and gesso.  We will build upon those layers with mixed media and adhering paper and ephemera.  Then we will add a focal point and find a way to express a thought or feeling through your journaling. You will learn new
skills while creating something you love.

Try whatever you want – this is for YOU!   Make a mess, paint or cover up what you don’t like.

When you’re stuck, art journaling sets you free.  You open yourself up and let your frustrations go.  You gift yourself the joy of experimentation.  You discover that you have something to say and you open your heart.

Meet Brittany Soucy!

I live on the seacoast of New Hampshire. (Yes, that exists and it’s beautiful.) I’m grateful that all I have to do is walk across the yard to go to work in my 200 year old barn-studio. It’s like the dream of my childhood and the wish of my heart have come true.

I make art because it has always felt like a natural way to process my world. I find myself searching for beauty and craving to find interesting and nourishing ways to express it. I am captivated by light and how its warmth, healing, and truth illuminate everything it touches.

I believe that setting aside time for making and appreciating art is an act of self-care. I now understand that the process of art making is an important balm that propels us toward healing. When I was younger I worried that being creative and artistic was a useless talent to have, but now I consider it both a pleasure and a sacred responsibility.

Book of Trees | 24 Hours Left Early Registration

***24 Hours Left For The Early Registration Price of $28***

We are so thrilled to announce that author and mixed media and collage art professor Roxanne Evans Stout is offering her newest online course on our creative network!  No matter what season it is right now in your neck of the woods you will not want to miss Book of Trees! Handmade books, stitching, stamp making, collage and more.

Book of Trees

In this class, we will delve wholeheartedly into the theme of trees and create a unique mixed media artist book that you will treasure forever!

I have always loved trees. As a little girl, I would sit under a large eucalyptus tree on the front lawn of our apartment in Santa Monica, California. I would read or work in my journal, writing, and drawing… even making nature observations- things I still love. Back then I longed to live in the country surrounded by trees.  Now I live in a small country town in Oregon, and my family and I have planted many trees on our land and watched them grow and thrive alongside us.

The gifts a tree can give are endless… their beauty, their strength and resilience, the way they provide us food and homes for wildlife, and the way they clean our air.

Won’t you join me as I guide and inspire you in the making of a handmade book… inspired by and celebrating your connection to trees?

Together we will collage with papers and fabrics, create textures and layers, and play with color. We will carve and print our own stamps and use images and quotes on the pages of our books. We will stitch and attach beautiful treasures from nature with threads and wire.

I will share with you my creative processes and favorite techniques that will add magic to your pages and I’ll share writing prompts to further your journey of honoring trees.

You will see how… day by day and moment by moment…your handmade book will evolve into a rich compilation of pages that is your very own Book of Trees.

Meet Roxanne Evans Stout

I live and create in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. The mountains, the river lands and the wildlife that surround my home are my constant inspiration and show up in all of my creations in some way or another.

I teach workshops internationally and my work has been shown and hangs in homes throughout the world. I’m very honored to have been published in many wonderful books and magazines.

I also teach online workshops that have been enjoyed by hundreds of artists and art lovers. And I am an Adjunct Professor at Oregon Institute of Technology where I teach Mixed Media Art and Art Journaling.

I believe that when we make art we are telling our own stories, and love watching them immerge, both in my own work and the work of others. Through my art, I would like to convey the feeling of connecting with nature and humanity, timelessness and hope.  I especially love the Book Arts, Collage and Mixed Media. As an artist, I am constantly learning and growing. Art is my passion, my love, and my soul.

Teaching enables me to share my passion…nothing makes me happier than helping my students through their own process of creativity. My goal is to help you find your magic!

My book: Storytelling with Collage, was published in March of 2016 by North Light Books. And my newest book, Dancing on Raindrops was just released July 2017.

Exploring Your Fears Through Collage | Begins on Tuesday!

***Exploring Your Fears Through Collage Begins on Tuesday***

Want to go on a creative adventure and figure some things out about yourself on the way? Today we are opening early registration for a brand new collage course being taught by art educator and therapist Stacy Bynion Stultz! Stacy will be leading us in Exploring Your Fears Through Collage!

We all know the healing power of creating and what it does for your happiness, contentment, and peace but this is bringing an even deeper healing power into your art.

Exploring Your FEARS Through Collage

“In art one must throw one’s life away in order to gain it.” Kafka

Fear is a universal experience. In this class, we will examine and acknowledge our deep-seeded fear and sit with it through the process of collage and art assemblage until it resonates with us, leading us to a journey of healing. Fear is not a problem to be solved but a tool to dismantle our structures of being.

“Bravery is not the absence of fear but an intimacy with it.”

Collage allows for us to find images that we may not be able to create otherwise. Looking through collected imagery; finding words, photos and pictures which illustrate your fears may begin the process of stepping toward them. Once this process is complete and organized in visual form, we will then gather images that help to heal, unravel and dispel the myth of that fear or fears and how it plays a role in preventing you from growing into your gifts.

Hopefully, this process will find you humbled and befriending yourself.

“This very moment is the perfect teacher and is always present.’ Pema Chodren

Let’s journey to wholly unanticipated expansion. Let’s answer what our fear says about us and what we would like to do with that fear. Where there is fear there is power. Personal imagery can move us from fear to joy as we assemble. move paper, overlay and tell out stories through collage.

“The man who fears suffering is already suffering from what he fears.” Micheal de Montaigne

We will witness the journeys of others and how they expressed their troubles and eventual healing through this process. I hope it will bring you some clarity and at least the beginning of a journey to self.

Supplies: Magazines, photo, hand-made images, words, phrases, glue sticks, glue, brushes, and card stock. Writing in any media and adding your own work is welcomed!

The registration price for this one week course (4+ hours of content) is $48.00. You will have LIFETIME ACCESS* to the videos. This class will go live on October 10, 2017.
