Fancy Lassies with Kate Thompson Begins on Monday! | We Have a Sneak Peek

***Monday morning Kate Thompson’s brand new online course Fancy Lassies will begin***

Kate Thompson is back on our creative network! We are so fortunate to gather some of the most incredible artists around and we are honored to have Kate back and this time teaching how to make her whimsical girls!

Kate is one of the most extraordinary artists that I know and I have no doubt that you will leave this course with so many new ideas that you can incorporate into your own art!

Come and take a sneak peek into Kate’s new course…

Fancy Lassies with Kate Thompson |

In this class, we will be creating fanciful girls using watercolors, pastels, and acrylics. These girls are created in a somewhat whimsical way but with some understanding of a more realistic approach. There will be exercises in creating a more realistic portrait which we will then use and abstract to something more fanciful.

I will show you how to make little watercolor paper books where we will explore techniques, prints and color ways. This will be a wonderful record to rely on as we work on more finished pieces.

I will then guide you as you start working on your own girls. I do have templates to download for you to practice the painting techniques. I then demonstrate how to draw the girls that we will then transform into fanciful creatures with very different personalities.

I demonstrate how to draw a portrait using charcoal. I then layer the charcoal drawing with watercolors and white acrylic paint. We will then paint watercolor and acrylic roses to garnish her face.

Supplies:

Watercolor paper, watercolors, paintbrushes, acrylic paints, milk paint, matte medium, gesso, charcoal, stabilo, mechanical pencil

Mixed Media Online Course Children of the Wild Begins Tomorrow!

***Tomorrow (June 20th)  Children of the Wild with Kate Thompson begins!***

Kate’s techniques and instructions will open your eyes to new ways to use the tools you already love and use.  Her courses are rich and full of content.

Our creative network has the most beautiful artists and I believe our courses are rich, affordable and some of the most art altering that are being offered today.

An artist that has been a part of the popular Studying Under The Masters series is now back with her own course and it is stunning! I am excited to announce that mixed media artist Kate Thompson will be leading Children of the Wild.

Come and hear from Kate about this course…

This course offers 8+ hours of videos filled with precious children and their friendships with animals. I created this class to share with you my love for animals and how they have enriched my life.

There will be 4 complete painting demonstrations. Each painting has its own unique story. The stories were not even developed till after I painted them.

I really take mixed media art to a new level by using some very unusual applications. I combine watercolors, pan pastels, charcoal with gesso. I work with graphite, charcoal, watercolor and inks with linseed oil. On top of all this goodness I apply oil bars with a palette knife. It all works, it really does!

I show you how to develop really yummy substrates for the paintings. One is layers of fabric and lace with gesso all embedded together for a uniformed and interesting surface. Another substrate using vintage ledger papers, stamping stenciling using transparent and matte paints.

There will be several exercises to get familiar with the techniques before working on the finished paintings. I go over basics such as mapping a photograph to understand proportions. How to start a child’s portrait, creating animals in a light hearted manner. So much fun and learning. I really enjoyed creating this class and I have learned some things myself along the way

The Living Studio Video Series {With Kate Thompson}

We have a new video for the Living Studio Video Series!

The free series that is all about your favorite artists sharing how they create wherever they go.

Kate Thompson is our guest artist this month and sharing what the Living Studio means to her!

Kate will be sharing how to create substrates using plaster, stencils and lace!

Here is a little more about Kate and where you can learn from her…

I have always been a creative person, studied and received a degree in Fiber Arts and worked as a textile print designer in the apparel business in Los Angeles for 20 years. My real education started in 2009. I started painting and I haven’t stopped. I became so focused with my work and developed a discipline to practice every day. After a couple of years of devoted practice I saw improvement. The point is I was not a natural painter. I really had to work at it and found I loved the discipline I put on myself to grow as a painter. I am a Mixed Media Artist and what that means to me is the combining of mediums. I work with watercolors and gesso, acrylics with oil, pastels with inks or all of them put together. I am an  experimenter.   I create my own substrates using vintage linens or painting on ledger paper. I also paint on more traditional substrates such as watercolor paper and canvas. I like adding plaster to everything! Right now my focus is on portraits and figures, but I am open to painting flowers ,  buildings and animals (as you will see in my new class). I like painting in muted colors and earthtones. I also love to paint color and this year every one of my paintings will have some pink in it. I really love pink which is surprising because I was always a tom girl.

I teach online as well a studio classes. I teach all over the United States, here are a few venues- Random Arts, Saluda, NC, Donna Downey Studio, Huntersville, NC, Art and Soul, Portland, Virginia Beach , Art Unraveled ,Phoenix as well as private workshops. My passion is focused on the creative process and I am as passionate about teaching as I am at creating art.

I sell my work on my website as well as at all teaching venues.

Join me for a FREE art video series! In The Living Studio Video Series you will have the opportunity to watch technique and medium videos from some of your favorite artists. The hope is that you will learn what practices different artists use to make their art a daily practice and how they create their studio wherever they go.

My heart behind The Living Studio is that we will all learn to explore and create wherever we live.

I hope to inspire people to step out of the comfort of their studios and out into the world and boldly create based upon the beauty all around them.

I don’t know how many times over the years I had walked past a person sketching in an art museum, painting in the gardens, practicing their watercolors in the mountains or writing at a cafe and I have stopped a moment to envy them.

They were doing it!

They HAD to be creative.

It is a practice and a preparedness that motivates you to create your studio wherever you go.

With practice and always having your tools with you…you live your creativity and the world becomes your studio.
