Art of Home {Registration Is Open}

I grew up with a large garden, morning cereal often had fresh berries from the backyard, clothes hung on the line, the sound of the sewing machine filled our home and my mom’s homemade grape juice is still one of my favorite things on earth.  I have always loved home and home is the place I want others to feel loved too.

Over the years I have also heard other women talk about things their moms or grandmothers did to make their homes special and practical.  Torn knees were patched, everything was made from scratch, fresh produce was preserved for winter and someone was stitching something sweet and lovely.  I think that many of us want to make sure we preserve some of our favorite memories and make them a part of own modern lives.  We want to create an artisan home!

When we can embrace our handmade home and see the beauty in the little things then our homemaking becomes art!   It is not perfect and the beauty is actually in embracing the imperfection.  It is following my Grandma Jeanne’s advice to only surround yourself with things you truly love and use.  It is pulling out your prettiest things and not saving them for company but lavishing your family daily.  It is not apologizing when your home is messy and inviting friends and neighbors in anyways.  It is about allowing your home and gifts to be used to do something sweet in you and those around you!  It is about sitting down with moms and grandmothers and grandfathers and hearing about their stories and finding your story in the midst of it.  It is about passing on the best of it to our children and grandchildren.

I am so excited to open registration for Art of Home | Modern Simple Living! This course came about while talking and cooking with my mom and sister.  My sister and I both couldn’t stop smiling about the heart of the course which was including the older people in our lives and listening to the ways they were taught how to make art of home!

Art of Home | Modern Simple Living will be about some of the lost arts of caring for our home and family.

Each week will contain step by step videos with decorating, cooking, gardening, entertaining, housekeeping and more…so much more!

2014 Holiday House Walk

{If you like the images on our mantle you can print them out HERE. We are all crazy for them and love how whimsical they are! Alice, I think you are the bees knees.}

I am so glad you have stopped by and I can’t wait to welcome you into our home.

I have loved home, making home and loving on the people I love for as long as I can remember.

The older I get the more I know…truly know…that loving on others and loving on my family is far better than a pretty home.

In this home you will find that art is made often, music is usually playing, a candle is burning, books are being read, the house is rarely really clean and I forget about dinner until around 4:30 each day.

More than anything I hope that our children remember how much they are deeply loved and accepted.

I hope they always carry with them their faith and how it will guide their steps all of their days.

I hope they will also know that a pretty house is nice but the people in that house are the best!

Welcome to our home.

Our whole family wishes you the most Merry Christmas!

I am so honored each time Jennifer Rizzo has asked me to be a part of her Holiday House Walk.

It is so much fun to be included with such a talented group of women that love family and making home comfortable and beautiful!

To begin the walk from the beginning click the icon below or go directly to Jennifer Rizzo.

If you are stopping over from Four Generations Under One Roof I am so glad you are here. Jessica and her family create such a gorgeous home!

Go grab something to drink and I hope you will take a moment to look around.

I decorate pretty simple for the holiday and over the years my Christmas bins have gotten fewer and fewer.

I really love to pull the outdoors in and use what is easily available out my front door.

We decorate our tree as a family and at least this year the ornaments seem to be scattered out evenly.

We have had many years where the tree almost fell over from having it too weighted from the front or they were all really low.

This year we are hoping for the tree to stay up!

Last year we made an Acts of Service Advent Tree and we all loved it.

This year we are also going to use it again because it really helped our days to be more focused on others and not just what we were hoping to receive.

I had to throw this shot in because I play my record player all day long. It is one of my favorite things and brings me oodles of joy.

This on the other hand brings my husband joy:-)

During my fall house tour I created a drink cart out of my IKEA art cart.

I loved it so much I decided to do it again but this time make it a permanent part of the living room at least through the holidays.

Just a peek into our library.  This is where we hold some of our books and the piano.

This is where my littlest loves to play on the floor and we all love it when the fire is going and it is toasty warm.

See that pillow?

That is from Craftberry Bush and her home is next!

We made the star our of twigs, tied them with string and strung copper lights from Anthro. It is truly one of my favorite pieces.

I use it year around all over the house.

The gorgeous Advent cards are from Naptime Diaries.

Go get yourself some twigs and twine and make yourself giddy happy.

Honest.

For those of you that haven’t seen the kitchen since last year’s house walk I bet you can’t believe the difference.

We aren’t done yet but we are getting there. I hope we are getting there. Things take WAY long in this house to get finished. I like to say that we are fashionably late. Are you buying it?

You can read more about it here, here, here and here.

One of my favorite things to change up each month is our hanging paper roll.

This month was inspired by the art work found HERE.

Pretty much one of my favorite Christmas songs!  Beautiful and powerful song. THIS is one of my favorite versions.

This sign is from my dear friend House of Belonging.  It is always a little hard to put this one away each year.

This is my studio and where I create and tape many of my online courses.

I love that this room used to be our dinning room and it is so close to the rest of the house and my family.

That is not always true…but most of the time.

I am so excited to tell you why this tree doesn’t have an ornaments on it yet.

We just started Unwrapping The Greatest Gift and each night in December the kids will decorate the “Jesse Tree” with ornaments we printed out.

We already have placed the first ornament on during our first night of Advent.  It was thought provoking and meaningful.

I am excited to see what the Lord reveals to us over the next month.

I usually include more of our upstairs but I was taking photos the morning we were leaving for our Thanksgiving adventure trip and there was nothing up there you would want to see.

Please check out our previous Holiday House Walks so you will know that the bedrooms are cleaned every once in awhile!

Thank you so much for taking a look at out home all dressed up for Christmas.

Please come back again!

You are going to love, love the next home.

Have so much fun going through Lucy’s home at Craftberry Bush!

I would love to have you check out my creative network where I have over 35 free and paid for online courses.

It is truly a lifestyle network with courses about home, cooking, bee keeping, art and so much more!

Creatively Christmas {a book, some crafting, our home and a giveaway}

Last January Jennifer Rizzo came and captured our home still decorated for the holidays.

After months of Jen writing, photographing and creating for her book I believe we were one of the last homes that she needed to photograph.

It was a fun time of working and playing during her visit and a sweet honor to be included in her first book!

I was able to see a draft of the book before it went to print and as I looked through it I had tears in my eyes for my dear friend that had created one of the most gorgeous Christmas DIY books I had ever seen.

This book is so packed full of things you can make for your home, as gifts, with your kids and friends.

When we finally had our own copy of the book in our hands Maddy and I went through picking out all of the things we wanted to make and yesterday Ben and Maddy made a few things.

I am pretty strict about following my own rule about no Christmas until after Thanksgiving but I had to break that to share this beautiful book.

The book is full of DIY decorating and gift ideas but it is also overflowing in decor photos of different homes dressed up for Christmas and the traditions of the holidays.

This book has many layers and brings you much more than crafting.

Here is a glimpse into our creating day inspired by Jen’s new book Creatively Christmas: Inspired Yuletide Decor.

Did I mention that the first printing sold out weeks ago? Yep, it’s that good:-)

I purchased two extra copies of the book to give away!

To enter just leave a comment on this post telling me one thing you love about Christmas or the holidays in general.

We will pick the winners next week.

I also wanted to remind you that Summer Art Camp For Kids will begin in less than two weeks!

This course will be instantly available on June 17th and it will be the perfect summer activity for your creative kid this summer.

Here is a little recap of the class…

Summer brings with it the promise of sunshine, long, lazy days and a slower, simpler pace we’ve all been craving. But, if you’re a mom or grandma, it might also bring with it two of the most dreaded words in the English language:

“I’m Bored.”

Enter Summer Art Camp for KIDS! An online art class for ages 5 – adult that will allow kids to cut, glue, paint, watercolor, sketch, collage, create and stretch their creative wings, all the while kicking boredom to the curb.

Author and paper artist Courtney Walsh will take kids on a guided journey through each of the five mixed media projects, encouraging students to think outside the creative box as she leads them through each step, breaking it down in a way they will easily understand and follow.

This online course is the perfect way to bond with your child, so feel free to get in on this artsy fun, save projects for rainy days or do them all in one week, the choice is up to you! Let’s have a creative summer together, shall we?

*The class will include 5 projects with art videos start to finish.

*Each course will have a supply list and templates

*There will be templates just for boys too!

To register click HERE.

I wanted to also announce the winner of the kid’s art supply giveaway!

I bet you all thought I forgot.

OK, I kind of did.

Amy Murillo commented:

LOVED spending the summers as a child up-north in Wisconsin. We had the best time playing outdoors, making do with what nature provided us to broaden our imaginations with. Thank you for a chance at your wonderful giveaway – I’m going to have our wonderful grandchildren for 3 weeks this summer, this would surely come in handy!!!

Amy, please email us at jeanneoliverdesigns@gmail.com with your address and we will arrange for you to receive your art supplies.

This giveaway package needs to be claimed by June 18th.

I hope you all have an amazing weekend and I will be back on Monday with some cabinet updates!

Each time you share about the sale or this post please come back and let us know.

Kelly and I wish we could just have a huge BBQ and invite you all over to thank you for making the site such a success. We started this site as a way to share my thoughts about using your gifts and to make art together. It has become so much more than that! The site has now become a place to take online classes about art AND home. It has evolved to include so many other artists, mediums and techniques. This site has become a place to watch free videos and to be inspired by the free series Creativity Takes Courage! Just typing all of this brings tears to my eyes because all of this is so much more than we had dreamed.

I always tell everyone that Kelly is my dream maker. He has always stood beside me and been my biggest cheerleader. He supports my crazy ideas and believes I can do anything and that my ideas won’t fail. As much as I boast that Kelly is my dream maker the true dream maker is the Lord. Every dream I have was planted by him.

What I love about this community is that every person that takes one of our courses helps to support that dream and the dream of other artists. I watch you all encourage each other through the courses and lift each other up. Your words and actions have become the dream makers to others too. Don’t ever take that lightly. That is good stuff!

I hope you will continue to love the site and the courses we offer. We have so many good courses coming to you this year and hope they are just what you have been wanting to grow your own gifts and to connect with a more creative life.

Thank you!. Truly!

Take Your Business To The Next Level {Giveaway Too}

I have a heart for women.

I am constantly amazed at the depth, quality, beauty, talent and strength of women.

I had promised myself when I first started my business that if I ever figured this whole thing out (and I am still learning) that I would share how I did it.

Along the way I have always tried to answer emails, encourage and support other small business owners (and dreamers).

I had questions at the beginning and I wish I had had a person to turn to.

I didn’t have a mentor and I could have really used one.

Not because I wanted to do what they were doing…because I wanted the knowledge and support to follow MY gifts.

I wanted to create a community of women that I can share my heart and journey with and then in turn they will encourage and support one another.

I am so excited to tell you that I have taken all of the best parts of the original Building a Creatively Made Business and have made it even better!

This time around I have asked my good friends (and business owners) Marian Parsons and Jennifer Rizzo to join me.
