CreativeGIRL: Storybooks and Studious Girls Has Just Launched!

Good Morning and Happy New Year!

We are celebrating 2015 with the launch of artist Danielle Donaldson’s brand new class CreativeGIRL: Storybooks and Studious Girls!  Danielle had one of the most popular and loved watercolor and mixed media classes of 2014 on the Jeanne Oliver Creative Network and we are thrilled to have her teaching this year too.

It’s time to work small and dream BIG! We’ll start off our week with by building a watercolor storybook from scratch – A big, yummy book with lots of room to illustrate everyday goodness, brilliant layers of water-colors, and colored pencil work.  Next, we’ll explore some of my tried-and-true techniques to help you grow and organize your creative practice in a brand new way. (Insert a few possible a-ha moments and a plethora of sparkly new ideas here.) Then we’ll spend some quality creative-time together imagining up an illustrated (and colorFULL) storybook superstar that you can call your own. But that’s not all! We’ll work through the basics of perspective drawing including color choices, one-point and two-point perspective. To finish up our week, we’ll smoosh all the creative goodness together and fill a page or two with a few of my favorites; a water-colored alphabet, comfy chairs, and a sweet little secret something.

Here is a little recap of the class…

Summer brings with it the promise of sunshine, long, lazy days and a slower, simpler pace we’ve all been craving. But, if you’re a mom or grandma, it might also bring with it two of the most dreaded words in the English language:

“I’m Bored.”

Enter Summer Art Camp for KIDS! An online art class for ages 5 – adult that will allow kids to cut, glue, paint, watercolor, sketch, collage, create and stretch their creative wings, all the while kicking boredom to the curb.

Author and paper artist Courtney Walsh will take kids on a guided journey through each of the five mixed media projects, encouraging students to think outside the creative box as she leads them through each step, breaking it down in a way they will easily understand and follow.

This online course is the perfect way to bond with your child, so feel free to get in on this artsy fun, save projects for rainy days or do them all in one week, the choice is up to you! Let’s have a creative summer together, shall we?

*The class will include 5 projects with art videos start to finish.

LOVED spending the summers as a child up-north in Wisconsin. We had the best time playing outdoors, making do with what nature provided us to broaden our imaginations with. Thank you for a chance at your wonderful giveaway – I’m going to have our wonderful grandchildren for 3 weeks this summer, this would surely come in handy!!!

Amy, please email us at jeanneoliverdesigns@gmail.com with your address and we will arrange for you to receive your art supplies.

This giveaway package needs to be claimed by June 18th.

I hope you all have an amazing weekend and I will be back on Monday with some cabinet updates!

Are You Open About Who Inspires You?

I don’t know where it came from.

This idea that everything you do must be 100% original and you must pull it out from the depths of your being.

It isn’t really you, good, original, authentic…unless you create something that has never been made or done before.

Can we just be real for a moment?

We all inspire and encourage one another even if you don’t realize it.

We can be inspired by magazines, movies, music, friends, paintings, museums, travel, architecture, the human body, dance, nature, sculpture, color…anything.

Anything.

One thing leads to another to another to another.

Creativity goes on and on.

D0 you know that is is limitless?

D0 you?

Do you know that with all your good ideas and creativity that there.is.more.in.you.

There is more!

I promise.

Do you want to hold onto your creativity because you think others will steal it, copy it and make it less of yours?

Do you hold tight without realizing that you have beauty in your life because others shared their beauty.

Their creativity

Their light

Their words

Their art

Their passion

Their process.

Do you not want to share who inspires you because then maybe people will realize that all of your ideas and inspiration came from in you AND around you?

Why would this ever be something to hide?

I think sharing who you admire that makes beauty is powerful.

Sharing who inspires your creativity is freeing.

With freedom comes more beauty and more creativity.

I can’t wait to share with you what artists I admire and the places I find inspiration.

I hope you will join me in Studying Under The Masters {becoming an apprentice}.

This course will change how you look at your art and the ones that inspire you.

Who Are They Studying Under?

Good morning!

I am so thrilled about your excitement over Studying Under The Masters {becoming an apprentice}!

For those of you that have registered (and those of you that may be hearing about it for the first time) I wanted to share WHO the teachers will be studying under.

First of all I want to say that having these eight incredible artists join me on this creative journey is humbling.

I adore each of these women for their creativity and many I am personal friends with and adore who they are to the core.

If you had the opportunity to learn from just one of them it would be an experience that would grow your creativity.

To take a course that includes all of them …get ready for something beautiful to come out of you!

Let’s look at the masters that each of the nine artists will be studying under…

Do you want to know more about the course?

The course begins January 14th.

There is a lost art of studying the works of others to find your own style.

All of the “masters” were first apprentices and were given the freedom to find their creative voice by literally sitting next to those who inspired them.

The apprentice sat beside them, listening to their descriptions of process, picking up their paintbrush and mixing their paint, creating a series of strokes that created something that told a story, and stirred their creative spirit.

And, with practice, the apprentice became a master in their own right – mixing together the old and the new.

Somewhere, over the course of time (and certainly with current social media) we have lost sight of openly emulating those who inspire us most.

Have you ever taken an online course, gone to a retreat, purchased an art technique book and were taught an artist’s techniques and mediums?

Have you ever been worried about what is your style and what is “their” style?

Have you ever been afraid to create art that was inspired by another artist?  This course is for you!

I want to offer a course that gives you some of the most amazing artists in history and how each of us can learn from them.

And that openly learning from them is a good thing.

Join nine artists as we become the “apprentice”.

We will share how we became a modern-day apprentice to those who came before us and those who work beside us now.

Through discussion and technique videos, each artist will share their week with a “master” as if they are sitting next to them.

You’ll learn who their “master” artist studied under, who influenced their work and what techniques and mediums they used.

An integral part of the artistic process was to “copy” the master artist until the apprentice could confidently integrate pieces of it into their own creative process.

In this course, you will watch as these artists “copy” the works of another artist.

You will then learn as they create art in their own style incorporating the techniques and/or medium of their chosen artist.

My hope is that you will leave this course with freedom in your creativity.

Freedom to pull from everything around you that inspires you and how to incorporate it into your art.

The confidence to realize that nothing is new under the sun and how to build upon others that have come before you.

The courage to share who inspires your creative works.

And most importantly, to know that we all learn in the same way.

This is the Art of Practicing.

Katie Kendrick, Stephanie Lee, Kate Thompson, Christy Tomlinson, Junelle Jacobsen, Danielle Donaldson, Teresa Sheeley, Jenny Wentworth and Jeanne Oliver

Would you like to know who won that $300 Dick Blick gift card?

Michelle Mathey – POMI commented:

This IS the class that I’ve been waiting for and didn’t even know it – I always question what part of my creations are “me” and what part are influenced by the works of others. Can’t wait to learn more as an apprentice to your 9 artists.
As a younger person I didn’t “get” Picasso at all but now am totally amazed at his artistry and vision. He is one of my favorite artists, for sure!

Congratulations!

Please email me at jeanneoliverdesigns@gmail.com and we will get you the gift card.

What Makes It Special For You? {i bet it is the little things}

It was November 2001, days before Thanksgiving and only a few days before my sister’s wedding.

Family had flown in from all over the country and we were hosting Thanksgiving dinner in our first little home in Ft. Collins.

Jack was just a little over 1 year old and this would be the first Thanksgiving meal I had ever prepared for more than just us.

I was excited about having my aunts and uncles in our home and blessing them like they had done for me over and over while I was growing up.

I was using my favorite entertaining cookbook (at the time) and excited to plan out the whole meal and put together the table setting.

I like things to be pretty but even more than pretty…I have always wanted people to leave our home knowing how much they are loved.

If you can imagine a 150 sq ft kitchen and eating area being used to prep and cook food for 10 people.

All of the women were in the kitchen working together (very closely).

I think there were five-six of us chopping, boiling, roasting:-)

It was quite a sight.

The best part was that I had never cooked a turkey this big before and it scared the crap out of me.

We were making butternut squash and apple soup from scratch and making the biggest mess you can possibly make in 150 square feet.

I was cooking with some of my favorite people.

I was with my mom, sister, my Aunt Jeannette and my cousin Jen.

We were laughing at all of the mishaps and just enjoying being together.

The turkey wasn’t done on time.

Shocker.

We had to put it back in and wait a little longer.

Jack had a melt down right as we were sitting down to eat.

We squeezed 10 people around a little table and I am sure more than knees were touching and not one person complained.

{I can’t believe we even found this photo}

The boys all washed the dishes and gave the girls a break after dinner.

It was perfect in all the ways that mattered.

I remember little about that day except the joy of being with family in my kitchen.

The help, the conversation, the love, the laughter and the joy I felt to host Thanksgiving dinner at OUR home.

**********

I asked each of the girls that are joining me in the brand new e-course Home for the Holidays to share with you a favorite tradition they love.

If you notice for each of the girls it isn’t something expensive or flashy.

It isn’t about perfection.

It is about friends and family.

It is about creating memories and traditions.

What is one of your favorite holiday traditions?

Thank you for all of the comments, emails and sharing on Pinterest over Jack’s new room.

He loves it and that is what is most important.

I have included all the sources for much of his room.

Even though many things were purchased for his room please keep in mind that we were “collecting” for over 6 months.

Luckily, we also live 10 minutes from the only Restoration Hardware outlet in the state.

That helped.

A lot!

With the outlet available we were able to purchase things for Jack’s room that we absolutely wouldn’t have otherwise.

If you have other questions about the room that I didn’t answer please leave a comment here or email me.

If I had to say the number one thing that really makes the room for me it would have to be the paint and molding.

Taking the time and effort to put up the molding was definitely worth it and painting all of the walls, woodwork, bookshelves the same color really pulled it all together.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

I hope you have a wonderful day!

Jennifer Rizzo Designs

Each week I will be featuring one of the teachers in my brand new class Creatively Made Home {home for the holidays}!

This class will begin October 15th.

{last week I featured Andrea Fowler of Keeping It Cozy}

This course will be all about loving on your family, friends and home during the holidays.

It is also about focusing on what is really important, how to handle the stress and how to create authentic moments with the ones you love.

I promise you that you will really laugh, may cry, be inspired and definitely encouraged.

You may even leave with a ton of decorating ideas, gift giving projects and fun recipes:-)

******

If you have taken any courses with me on my creative network you have probably seen the talents of Jennifer Rizzo.

Jen has been a part of my courses since the very beginning.

She has taught beginner Santos dolls techniques in Creatively Made, showed her DIY and design side in Creatively Made Home and taught an in depth Santos Cage Dolls course.

As much as I admire Jen’s creativity…it is her friendship that is the treasure.

I am so blessed that she is joining me again for Creatively Made Home {home for the holidays}.

If you were a part of the original Creatively Made Home you KNOW how funny Jen is and how comfortable she is behind the camera.

You feel like she is your best friend and you are just hanging out together.

Jen is also one of the most creative people I know and one of the most hardworking.

This creativity and drive to learn and figure out anything means that she brings you amazing projects with easy to follow instructions.

I would describe Jen’s style as boho, prairie, vintage and eclectic…what I am saying is that she is the original Anthropologie:-)

Jen also doesn’t want to buy something that she can make.

She is all about saving money but not sacrificing on the look she is after.

Here is a peek into Jen’s incredible home and her style…

**********

I can’t tell you what Jen’s projects will be but I promise you that they will be good:-)

You may also want to checkout the outstanding job Jen and her husband just did on their rental property!

It just went on the market and you can see the past four months of work they have put into it.
