Modern + Cozy Christmas Kitchen | Seasons of Home Holiday Decor Series

The older I get the more I just go more with the flow and I don’t stick to rules (and most of the time the rules I created for myself). Even a few years ago I made sure we didn’t decorate for Christmas before Thanksgiving. I felt like it wasn’t honoring of Thanksgiving (like Thanksgiving was all upset about it or something). Instead, I am just diving into cozy and we will enjoy it even longer. We are still present and enjoying fall and the gift that Thanksgiving is. We still go and get our main Christmas trees the day after Thanksgiving but expect to be hearing Christmas music if you come to the Oliver’s starting immediately.

This is our first blog post of 2017 sharing our home all cozy for Christmas and the holidays. The impact already on the feel of the house is just what we were wanting. It is simple, warm and so, so cozy. I am so honored to be a part of the Seasons of Home Holiday Series created by Kristen Whitby of Ella Claire. The whole heart of the tour is to share simple inspiration as you head into the season of gathering.

I am a big believer that opening your home to others and loving on them is still one of the most beautiful gifts you can offer.

Make sure you scroll to the bottom and take the full tour! These women have such a gift and it is such a joy to be a part of the tour.

My idea of cozy is layers, textures, soft lights, candles, foraged treasures and good music. And wine. Don’t forget the wine.

It can be fun to pick up something special every once in awhile but I like to keep my decorating simple, find new uses for older treasures and to bring in the outdoors as much as possible.

You will see art all over our home and this sculpture our daughter created a few years ago is one of my prized possessions.

Even though I want our home to be beautiful I want it to be comfortable and used. Each space in our home has been created to be lived in and to not be for show.

We have only been in this home for a little over a 1 1/2 years so we are taking our time putting it together and especially to make purchases.  Leave walls empty just for those paintings that you haven’t found yet!

Thank you for stopping by and allowing us to share our modern + cozy kitchen!

Some of My Fall Favorites {2014}

Fall is my most favorite season because the beautiful change in season, cooler temperatures and the desire to create a more cozy home.

This is the time I find myself cuddling next to the fireplace in the morning with my coffee, a book, devotions or just talking to my family.

My studio calls to me even more than usual when the temperatures start to drop and the light is flooding in over all of my supplies.

Sweaters, boots, hats and bonfires are the norm and the crunching of the leaves underfoot keeps you company on early evening walks.

Fall is when we were married and when two of our babies were born.

Fall to me is a reminder to me how much the Lord loves us.

Even as everything is dying is puts on the most incredible show…for us!

I went walking through our home this morning and wanted to share just some of the little things that make fall a little more cozy.

1. I love a day when the turntable is spinning and these records are constantly playing this fall.

* The Civil Wars

* Mumford and Sons

* Carol King

* The Lumineers

2. I love this scent from Anthro but the best part is the new copper lid. Perfect for fall!

3. I start each morning with warm water with lemon, tea or coffee and this cup is my new favorite. I don’t know if it is the cool waffle patter or smaller size but I like everything about it.

4. How can you resist a watercolor painted buck?  I know, right? This beauty keeps me company in my studio.

5. I love to cook in the fall and winter and these are a few of our favorites right now…

* Butternut Squash and Sausage Soup

* Pumpkin Pancakes and Apple Cider Syrup

* Pumpkin Spice Latte

6. I love this tea so much! I buy mine from Whole Foods.

7. This was my gift from Kelly this month for our 16th wedding anniversary.  We took it to the mountains with us when we stayed in Estes for a mini getaway and it is so fun and easy.

8. This course just helped me so much to notice this season and appreciate the changes around me. I may just need to do a course specific to fall each year:-)

9. Sure I drink Earl Grey…but did you know I wear it too?

10.  This movie is one of my all time favorites and just begs to be watched in the fall.  Who agrees?

11. I have this print on the wall heading up our stairs. I read it hundreds of times a week and love the song and the story behind it.

12. I have used essential oils in our home for as long as I can remember but I have been so much more intentional with them the past four months.  I add the lemon in my water, the deep relief on my temples when I feel a headache coming on, the peppermint in the diffuser while I am working or the kids are doing homework, Thieves to ward off sickness, lavender in the diffuser and on my skin, peace and calm in Benjamin’s diffuser to help him sleep and so much more.

13. These are one of my favorite pairs of earrings and the best part is that they were made a crazy artist:-)

14. Coolest book I have seen in awhile. My friend Danielle gave me the heads up on this one and I am so glad and listened.

Some of my favorite things about fall that don’t cost almost anything…

long walks and crunching leaves

hot cider

wrapped up in a blanket in front of the fire reading your favorite book

crispness in the air

leaves changing colors

bonfires and s’mores

drizzly days and time in the studio

sweaters, boots and slouchy hats

jumping in piles of leaves

pumpkin carving

pumpkin anything

gathering with family

Creating a Cozy Home {Part II}

Obviously I like writing about this because I am back for more:-)

My last post was supposed to be longer but I needed to make dinner for my family.

I thought it would be weird to tell them to go make themselves a sandwich while I write about creating a cozy home.

So….here is the second part of “Creating a Cozy Home”.

Really it is just some of my favorite things that make me feel good about our home and make our home feel cozy.

{my chicken chili with warm, crusty bread dripping with butter, making art just for me (all by myself), the yummy smell of food cooking on the stove, things around me that have meaning, fresh flowers throughout the home, spending time with the Lord early in the morning, making popcorn and cuddling up with Kelly and the kids}

What about you?

What makes your home cozy and inviting?

Making a Cozy Home {time to cuddle up}

I know I am not alone when I say that the cooler weather inspires and encourages me to love on my home more.

The leaves falling and the cooler days and nights just make everything just a bit more cozy.

I love having a cozy home and making my family feel warm and loved.

Sometimes it is just the little things that can change the whole feel of a home.

My home is rarely as clean as I would like but it is usually picked up and that is usually good enough for me.

Music is always playing in our home, candles burn all day and nothing makes me feel more awesome as when a yummy meal is on the stove.

When I think of fall I just think of cozy and all the ways I love to embrace it.

When the sun says goodbye early, the temperatures begin to drop and the fireplace beckons us….

One of our favorite things to do is to each grab a blanket and either read as a family or each read on our own in the living room.

I love looking around the room and seeing everyone I love so much all loving books like I do. It is a little thing but it makes me so happy.

Here are my go to cozy picks.

{making art together, big cup of something warm, baking together, listening to good music, coffee with whipped cream and cinnamon, trying new cookbooks, candles burning, French coffee, cuddling up to watch Little Women, moving things around in my home and redecorating with what I have}

My days have been focused for many months on our new e-course Creatively Made Home and it has been fun to have my mind and heart so focused on my home, family and friends.

This week I talked a lot about using what you have to decorate.

I also encouraged them to ask their families what they love the most about how they make their home, what makes them feel special in their home etc.

It is easy to get sidetracked by that couch you want, the drapes you wish you could afford and forget that it really doesn’t have anything to do with how your family feels about being in this special space you have created.

I encourage you to ask the same thing to the people in your life.

I asked my own family and it was sweet to hear what they love about how I love on them and take care of our home.

Here are some of the things they said….

I love this!

THESE are the things they will remember about our home.

THIS is what they will take away with them after they are grown.

It has nothing to do with the carpet, furniture or bedding.

All of that stuff is fun and pretty but it isn’t the stuff that really matters.

Have fun making your home cozy!
