Sneak Peek Into Week One of Wild Awakening | Painting Big With Expressive Freedom

I hope you had a wonderful weekend. We have been busy in the studio getting week one of Wild Awakening | Painting Big With Expressive Freedom ready to launch on Tuesday, January 24th!

This is my first online course of 2017 and it is all about getting out of your comfort zone but having fun in the process.  I hear all of the time from people that they pass the large canvases in the art supply store and think about buying one. OR they buy one and it sits waiting for them to do something with it.  Are you scared to paint big? We all are until we do it and figure out how to manage that space, what marks work and what do we have to say that big.

I would love for you to join me for a two week painting and mixed media course all about painting bigger, finding creative freedom, telling your story like never before, breaking out of your comfort zone and creating art that you have dreamed about creating.  When I started to honor my own story and to find the marks, symbols, palette and strokes that resonated with me I started making art that brought joy like never before.  I felt free.  It truly became a creative awakening.

Here some peeks into week one…

I will share how I take ideas from sketches to the canvas and how to start when you don’t have any ideas at all.  I will teach how to stretch your own canvases and never be limited by the size of your art again. We will incorporate huge image transfers, collage and painting, vintage ephemera, creative substrates and projector work. We will make bold marks and let creativity lead us.

We will take all of the ideas you already have or that are just under the surface and bring them to life in a whole new way.

We will create using abstract storytelling, figures and even still life.  We will incorporate movement and marks that I know will bring new growth to your work too.

You can watch the trailer HERE or click on the image below…

I have divided this course into two weeks to give you time to dive into the content and to slowly get your feet wet as we work bigger and bigger. Wild Awakening is a 10+ hour course with lifetime access.  This course is $52 and the course will begin on January 24th at 9am MST.  Once you pay you are instantly in the course and ready for it to begin.

I would love to create big with you!

Documented Life Project FREE Video 2016 |All About the Gold!

I am so honored to be back as a featured artist with the Documented Life Project 2016.

I would like to give a little full discloser that I obviously don’t read instructions and I totally missed my assignment. For real!

It is midnight here and I am seeing for the first time that it was suppose to be simple and small. This is awkward.

My husband does all of my video edits, uploading etc. so you can imagine his eye rolling just now when he heard how short this was suppose to be and how easy his job should have been!

I hope you will just forget for a moment what I was supposed to do!

Do I get any points for getting one last project in for the year and actually getting it accomplished before the holidays?

I love you all and thank you for all the amazing women over at Art to the 5th for inspiring and encouraging so many!

Here is to 2017 and adding a little more gold to all of the beauty that we all create!

Let’s now pretend I can follow instructions…

Gorgeous Work Being Created in Paint Your Town!

I would love to take a moment to share the gorgeous work being created in my online course Paint Your Town: Mixed Media Urban Landscapes. It is truly blowing me away!

It is never my intention to teach other artists how to create art like me but to take techniques and make them their own.  The artists in this course are doing just that!

I am so moved by how they took techniques and prompts and then with connecting with their world they made them their own. The most beautiful part is how they are all showing up and capturing the life in front of them! Bravo!

The heart behind this course was to encourage other creatives to not wait for a special trip or an art retreat to connect with the world around them. When I reflected on some of my favorite artists the truth was that they may have been inspired by a special trip or an art friend but the body of their work was created by PAINTING THEIR TOWN, THEIR FRIENDS, THEIR HOMES, THEMSELVES! Isn’t that encouraging and inspiring!

Come and get a GLIMPSE into the art being created within the online workshop by the students…

Paint Your Town: Mixed Media Urban Landscapes Course Trailer

Here is peek into the content of the course…

Sometimes we get to be wild explorers and travel far away, other times we can connect with other creatives not far from home and at other times we have the joy of hunkering down right where we live and creating among our day to day life.  Each one of these are life giving and creative building travels.

I love that my travels have allowed me to build beautiful new friendships, sketch among stained glass windows and old wooden pews, sip espresso as I watch the locals pass me by and learn to get out of my comfort zone and create wherever I go.

I also love that it has taught me to find the beauty in the ordinary and familiar. This is the practice that has grown me most as an artist and has allowed me to practice daily.

In Paint Your Town | Mixed Media Urban Landscapes we will become tourists in our own towns and open our eyes to the photography, sketching, architecture, people, cafes, painting, connecting, history and beauty right in front of us.

In this class we will create abstract landscapes, work with sketching and watercolors, collage, image transfers, charcoal sketches and create mini works of art to create our own Paint Your Town journals when we are done.

The heart behind my art and classes is to encourage practice, use what you have and to create wherever you go. I hope you will join me!  This will be the fall that your town becomes your favorite travel destination!

This online art workshop has over 20 videos, 7 1/2 hours worth of content and lifetime* access to the content.

Documented Life Project Art Video {Creating with Ephemera}

Good Morning!

Thank you so much for joining me!  I am so honored to be a part of such a talented group of teachers and students.

I am excited to be the featured artist for the Documented Life Project and today I am sharing my videos!

I have just returned from teaching in Italy and one of the classes I taught I thought would be perfect for this challenge.

I adore vintage ephemera and it is really the main thing I purchase during my travels and I cherish every little scrap.

There is something dreamy about the texture and patina of vintage papers and it is a beautiful way to reuse gorgeous colors, text and penmanship of the past.

Before we get started I wanted to share a little tip about journaling and introduce myself…

Let me introduce myself!

{With Jeanne Oliver}

Documented Life Project Art Video {Ephemera} PART TWO

Step by Step Instructions

1. Cover your substrate with clear gesso and let dry

2. Sketch with your charcoal pencil, damp paintbrush and white gesso.  Add Stabilo as needed.  Just have fun and experiment with these mediums as you move them around with the water.

3. Once your sketch is dry you can begin adding your torn vintage papers with Liquitex Matte Medium.  Make sure you put the matte medium on your paper and seal with the matte medium.

4. Add a few pieces of vintage book pages to the neck and face following the steps in #3.

5. Paint the background and while it is wet mark into it with the back of your paintbrush or if it has dried mark into it with your exacto knife.

6. Mix a basic skin tone with titanium white, yellow ochre and crimson.   Add neo color II to the face to create more depth.  I like payne’s grey, yellow ochre, crimson and flesh.  These move around beautifully with just a bit of water. If you add too much don’t worry and just lift off with a dry rag or wet wipe.  Dry between each layer to prevent your colors turning into brown.  I always think a little extra white paint (or white gesso) above the eyes at the end makes a face more interesting. Remember that less detail is definitely more.  Experiment with letting your brain pull the pieces together and not feeling like every little detail of the face needs to be included.

7. A few tips to remember: hold your brush back and loose, let go of the details, turn the music up and just have fun:-)

Summer of Art {won’t you join me?}

(photo taken by my rock star, photographer friend Tiffany Kirchner-Dixon)

I have left this summer wide open.

I wanted to make sure that we had time to do more hiking (our favorite family activity), work on the house, work in the yard, read books with the kids and MAKE ART!!!

Really, really, really make art.

Sometimes the business of business is…well….business!

I am giddy just thinking of the paint and messy hands in my future.

If your heart flutters a bit when you just think about making art I hope that this summer you WILL MAKE ART!

For those of you that want to make art but don’t know where to start or would love a little direction this summer
