Exploring Your Fears Through Collage | Early Registration Just Opened

Want to go on a creative adventure and figure some things out about yourself on the way? Today we are opening early registration for a brand new collage course being taught by art educator and therapist Stacy Bynion Stultz! Stacy will be leading us in Exploring Your Fears Through Collage!

We all know the healing power of creating and what it does for your happiness, contentment, and peace but this is bringing an even deeper healing power into your art.

Exploring Your FEARS Through Collage

“In art one must throw one’s life away in order to gain it.” Kafka

Fear is a universal experience. In this class, we will examine and acknowledge our deep-seeded fear and sit with it through the process of collage and art assemblage until it resonates with us, leading us to a journey of healing. Fear is not a problem to be solved but a tool to dismantle our structures of being.

“Bravery is not the absence of fear but an intimacy with it.”

Collage allows for us to find images that we may not be able to create otherwise. Looking through collected imagery; finding words, photos and pictures which illustrate your fears may begin the process of stepping toward them. Once this process is complete and organized in visual form, we will then gather images that help to heal, unravel and dispel the myth of that fear or fears and how it plays a role in preventing you from growing into your gifts.

Hopefully, this process will find you humbled and befriending yourself.

“This very moment is the perfect teacher and is always present.’ Pema Chodren

Let’s journey to wholly unanticipated expansion. Let’s answer what our fear says about us and what we would like to do with that fear. Where there is fear there is power. Personal imagery can move us from fear to joy as we assemble. move paper, overlay and tell out stories through collage.

“The man who fears suffering is already suffering from what he fears.” Micheal de Montaigne

We will witness the journeys of others and how they expressed their troubles and eventual healing through this process. I hope it will bring you some clarity and at least the beginning of a journey to self.

Supplies: Magazines, photo, hand-made images, words, phrases, glue sticks, glue, brushes, and card stock. Writing in any media and adding your own work is welcomed!

The Living Studio Along the Danube {pictures + thoughts}

Good Morning!  We have been back from our big trip along the Danube for two weeks now and it is crazy that something so beautiful and special begins to feel like a dream when you need to jump back into normal life. I think we need a few weeks to re-enter regular life:-)

This was the first Living Studio that we have ever had on a river cruise.  I had a pretty good idea of how our time would go but I was blown away by the service, food, personal touches, art space, excursions and lavishing by the staff and their attention to detail.  If you are going with us on The Living Studio Along the Seine you are in for a trip of a lifetime and you will be spoiled!

I always feel like the most amazing women come together for our workshops and this one was no exception. This group truly embraced what the Living Studio is all about and I saw them time and time again showing up, getting out of their comfort zone and creating out on our excursions. It was so inspiring to see! From our many conversations I know that a beautiful habit has begun and it will be practiced at home.

My husband Kelly and our sixteen year old Jack was able to come on this trip. This was so fun for me to have their support, encouragement and to share this trip of a lifetime with them. To watch as Jack was seeing Europe for the first time was worth all of the sacrificing to get him there. To see his heart expand towards the world, for him to see that we are all not that different, to see kids his age listening to music he loves and dressing like him, to hear him saying again and again, “I could live here” and to know that our son now sees that the world is a little smaller because of this trip.  Kelly and I were once again thankful that we homeschool and that this was a new and beautiful part of his education that he will remember for the rest of his life.

Travel does that. It opens you up, expands your heart and mind and fills you with so much beauty and inspiration. I hope you will consider joining us in the spring for The Living Studio Along the Seine (there are only a few spots left).

Here is a peek into The Living Studio Along the Danube…

Our first four days were spent is gorgeous Prague!

Then we traveled to Germany to board our boutique river cruise ship that would be our home over the next week.

We would go through Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary.

Look at our view as we made art!

Walking around Passau, Germany.

Each day we could all choose what we EACH wanted to do for our excursions. This made it so much fun to go on a walking tour, to a castle or a bike ride.

Here we were taking a bike tour around Linz, Austria.

After a morning art class Kelly, Jack and I stayed on the ship and rested, watched movies, got massages and made art. It was the perfect was to rest and get ready for more fun the next day.

One of my favorite days was bike riding through the vineyards and orchards. It was a magical day.

Then it was off to Vienna…

One of the sweetest surprises of the trip was the most inspiring art museum in Slovakia. In the middle of nowhere was an architectural masterpiece!

The trip to the museum was a special gift from the ship for just us as a thank you for bringing our workshop to them.

Our first glimpses of Budapest as we sailed into this exquisite city.

No photo will show you how incredible our illumination tour in Budapest was from the ship!

This was our last night together and it was the perfect ending!

I will be back to the Danube for sure!

The next post about The Living Studio Along the Danube will be all about the art that was created!

Come and See What They Created {Sketching and Sculpting in Santa Ana}

Last week I left a house that was being packed up for a move across town and I flew to teach in Santa Ana, California. Part of me found it difficult to leave in the midst of so much to do and the other part of me wanted to race to the plane as fast as possible.

I left right before a snowstorm was about to hit and landed in sunny (yet windy) California. Just days before my trip my good friend Danielle Donaldson decided to tag along and be my helper (I promise I didn’t really make her work too hard). She was the perfect distraction to my packing up stress and made talking as you drift off to sleep so much more fun than talking to yourself.

I had a sold out and beyond class at Studio Cresendoh and was surrounded by the most incredible artists. The group was exceptional with their humor, energy, attitudes and talent.

It is a gift to have two full days to spend and share thoughts, mediums and techniques with a room of other artists. I feel like you truly get to have a glimpse of each other creatively and you can take your time to unravel the lessons more organically. The premise behind our two days was all about finding and seeing your style. We can take online classes, workshops, read books about art but what is our natural hand? Touch? Style? I think with a few key practice lessons it doesn’t take too long to find it, notice it, accept it and go forward boldly.

As an artist I know that my deepest desire with my art is to create authentic art that tells my story.   That means embracing my hand, my natural tendencies, my imperfections and my story. The first day of my sketching and sculpting workshop was full of fast moving prompts with limited mediums to encourage authentic mark making and tendencies. At the end of the day we spread our work out and we were each able to see the authentic ways our touch was creating a style all our own. This full day of practice was to show us our touch and then to take those authentic elements and incorporate them into our sculptures the following day.

Day two was just pure fun with each artist creating an industrial armature and learning basic sculpting techniques. Most of the artists had never sculpted before and they were incredibly open minded and adventurous to dive right in.  Each artist carried their authentic hand into their sculpting. At the end of the workshop Nancy Holly (go right now and check out her work. It made me weep it is so stunning) took a photo of each sculpture and created these fun collages so we could see all of our work together (A few of the women had to leave before this photos was taken). Can you even believe many of these women had never used clay before?!

Teaching and connecting with women in person is one of the best parts of my job. I do not to it as often as I would like because I am honestly the biggest homebody and I can’t stand to leave my family BUT when I teach I connect with that part of me that can only be reached through teaching.

Thank you to each of the women that truly SHOWED UP creatively! You repeatedly got out of your comfort zone over the two days and created beautiful art and made me laugh a whole lot the whole time.

Until next time.

If you would like to create together here are so upcoming events (also I am announcing my first two day workshop here on our new property very soon).  They are all sold out at this time but most have a wait list.

Online workshops that have just started or that are starting soon…

Making Art Sing with Julie Johnson begins in Less Than TWO WEEKS!

One of the most popular classes on our creative network last year was Julie Johnson’s Scribble Art!

Julie is a born teacher and she provides rich content full of technique, inspiration and encouragement.

We are honored to have her back on our creative network teaching her newest online course…

Making Art Sing | Values, Shapes and Lines

This is a one week course that will compliment and expand on her very popular online course Scribble Art! You do not have to take her first course to take Making Art Sing.

***

In Julie’s words about her newest online workshop…

Making art sing is finding a melody that is unique to each one of us in our art.

We all have our own voice.

It’s time to find the confidence in the gracefulness of your lines and notes of yummy moments that turn into our focal points along with the success of values.

We will be using simple materials in order to really see the form and study the movement of the head and body and street scene, hands, and intuitive drawing. Most materials you probably already own, pencil, pen, stabilo marks-all pencil, charcoal, ink, gesso, eraser, paintbrush, q-tips, Art journal, Bristol paper. Add a couple new materials; vellum (is a versatile 90lb multi-purpose paper, semi transparent using the tooth side we will use ink and charcoal) and inktense pencils (waterbased) and that is all we need to make art that sings with your voice!!!

Looking forward to hearing all the different tones as we study values.

A peek into the rich course content

Sneak Peek of Week Two {Reflections: Paint Your Story}

All of my courses come from an authentic place of walking through something, discovery and/or personal growth.

One of the biggest lessons I learned creatively in 2015 was that it was time to really tell my story. To hold nothing back and to start letting it spill all over the page. There is art I have never shared and maybe art I will choose not to share. That is your freedom also. Getting your story out and letting it guide your creative process will change your creative heart and the art that you produce.

Your own authentic art is only a story away!

Here is a sneak peek into WEEK ONE!

Here is a sneak peek into WEEK TWO!

***

Join me for a two week art journaling online course all about unraveling your own story and creating authentic art that only you can tell.

When I started to see my own stories as being meaningful and significant my art began to change. When I could look back and find my own timeline and defining moments I was able to start digging deeper as an artist and my creating became more of a time of remembering, honoring, forgiving, healing and celebrating. It made me more intentional about where I wanted to go creatively and how I wanted to share it.

Reflections Trailer Video

If you think your story isn’t good enough…you are mistaken.

If you are afraid to tell your story…maybe it is time to find freedom

If you have never told your story…it is time.

If you want to create authentic art that no one else can create…let’s get started.

Some of the techniques being taught: sketching, acrylic painting, charcoal, ink, image transfers, portraits, watercolors, abstract sketching and painting, collage and more.

I will be leading this two week online workshop but I have asked some of my favorite people to join me and share how they document their own authentic stories!

Come and meet the incredible line up of artists!

You will get to learn from each of the women in a step by step art journaling video!

Come and learn more about Danielle Donaldson, Junelle Jacobsen, Sheila Atchely, Stephanie Ackerman and Cathy Walters.

Danielle Donaldson is known for her whimsical and colorful mixed media and watercolor paintings. She is the author of the popular book CreativeGIRL: Mixed Media Techniques for an Artful Life.

Junelle Jacobsen brings her love of nature, photography, faith and animals into her colorful creations. She is a mixed media artist and popular teacher.

Cathy Walters is a photographer and mixed media artist. Her animal paintings have caught the eye of many collectors and popular shops. Her newest journey has lead her into art journaling to document daily highs and lows.

Stephanie Ackerman fills her pages with stitching, doodles, watercolors and her signature lettering. Her heart is to connect with women and to share her faith.

Sheila Atchley is a mixed media artist and jewelry designer with a heart for family, faith and women.

I am so honored that they will be sharing in this course.

The registration price for this two week online course is $48.00. This course will begin on January 18, 2016 (but your can join in at anytime) and you will have LIFETIME ACCESS* to the videos.
