Mother’s Day Gift Guide

I kind of love Mother’s Day.

I have another reason to remind my mom how much I love her and how much she did for us. Pretty much we are half way decent people because she was a rockstar…stuff like that.

I also get to get treated like a queen myself for one magical day!

Finding gifts for people I love is one of my favorite things and I have a drawer in my bedroom with little treasures I find for my dearest people.

I used to hate it so much when I would ask my mom what she would want for her birthday, Christmas or Mother’s Day. She would always say nothing. Girl, I will tell you what I want!  In all honesty though…I find myself asking my kids for very simple things that I love about who they are. This year I asked Maddy to write me a letter, Ben to write me a song (he wanted to) and for Jack to compose me a piece on the piano (this is like breathing for him).  These are the things that usually make me a puddle of tears on the floor and make me forget that Ben and Maddy were exchanging insults a few moments earlier.

Maybe you want to include a little something extra with that letter, song or composition. If so, this post is for you!

1. Cashmere. Enough said. I love this shop and have so many daily household and luxury items from them.

2. It is hard for me to buy a purse when we make them and I have a closet of vintage ones BUT I would gladly accept this if anyone wants to get it for me.

3. This is an oldie but goodie but I have three and I use them each week, they will out last me, I will pass them onto my kids and they are just so dang pretty.

4. Everyone month I get a new record from the Magnolia Record Club. I have been introduced to so many new artists that are now on regular rotation.

5. While I was in Paris Maddy and I went to the most beautiful perfumery. As soon as I stepped into the shop I was surrounded by a visual masterpiece from packaging, decor, scents and intentional curating.

6. I LOVE this bike. I don’t have it but I have been keeping it’s picture around hoping that will change.

7. I love to have friends and family over and nothing gathers people like a fire pit. I think this one is so beautiful from Terrain.

8. We have a Nepresso in the kitchen and another one in the studio and it feels like a special treat each time I make one. This is a splurge but so fun!

9. I own several pieces of ceramics from Erin Clemmons and each piece is a work of art.

10. When I want to send a friend or family flowers this is the company I use because of their attention to detail. Who can resist the vintage grain sack? Not me!

11. I just finished this book and promptly suggested it to my mom. I am pretty much obsessed with Malcolm here and believe a good book is always the perfect gift.

Living Room Before and After

We have officially been in this house for one year as of tomorrow.

That is so hard for us to believe but when we look back over the past year we can’t believe all we have accomplished in that time (and all the things we still want to do).

This home has creatively been so fun! It has allowed us to go a totally different direction with our style and to create a fun space for our family.

This home has become a gathering space unlike any home we have had.

That was what was hinted at, prayed for and provided.

If you haven’t read our home journey you can find it here:

Part One

Part Two

Part Three

We have been so busy making the house our own and creating our new studio that I have forgotten to show you some of the other house projects.

I thought I would start with our living room.

Let me show you what we saw when we first saw this space. These next photos were from the PREVIOUS OWNERS…

This space was their dinning room, the walls were all a peachy tan color and they had built in this buffet piece.

Once we purchased the home (and before we moved in) we had all the walls and trim painted Nano White and all of the window frames painted black.

I am pretty sure the painters thought we were nuts but I assured them that if I hated the windows they were going to make a whole lot more money painting them white.

The next thing we did was replace all of the lighting throughout the home.

We also ripped out the built in buffet before having the house painted.

The other two homes we had placed offers on had wood burning fireplaces and I was pretty sad that this home only had one gas fireplace (the previous owners took out one other fireplace that was located in the kitchen) and it was in the master bedroom.

It didn’t make sense for our family to have a dinning room right next to the eat in kitchen so I thought it would be the perfect place for a small living room with a fireplace.  The original plan was to add a modern wood burning stove in this space but the depth needed was taking too much out of the floor space. We went with the most modern gas fireplace we could find that would work in the space and also allow us to have the sitting space we wanted.

Here is a photo of the space during one of our final inspections. You can’t tell in this photo with our realtor but we were really excited.

Here is a photo before the fireplace was added. If you peek into the library/music room you get a peek of that space before we built the bookshelves. That will be the next before and after:-)

BEFORE

Here are some of the progress photos.

Here are some of our AFTER photos. The black special order exposed pipe/vent was worth it. It really brought the modern feel that were were wanting into the space.

This is the space were we read, have coffee in the morning and even listen to music. Because it is right off the kitchen it is the place where our friends and family also gather. The fireplace transformed the space and also helped add to the look of the space that we were creating throughout the whole house.

My best advice is to trust your gut with what you want in your home. Don’t let the painters or even friends talk you out of the ideas you have. Big deal if you make a wrong paint decision…paint again. Really. We are having so much fun and we love the direction our home is taking.

Acts of Service Advent Tree

For the past few years we have used our Acts of Service Advent Tree during Christmas and I always get a lot of questions about it.

Even though this post is an oldie I still think it is worth sharing again!

This idea originally came to me while I was watching Anne Marie’s Twig Tree video in Home for the Holidays.

She was creating a small twig tree to hang on the wall and I knew right away that I wanted to make it big and hang acts of service off of it.

We sat down as a family and we started brainstorming things we could do as a family.

I typed all of the acts up in Word and printed them out.

We cut the acts of service into strips and folded them over to get them ready to stuff into the stars.

Our stars are made from craft paper using a star template I found online.

We (my mom) started to sew them all shut with the acts of service inside but my machine was driving her NUTS so I told her we could go with Plan B.

Always have a Plan B.

For half of the star we glued them shut with a glue stick (only getting glue around the edges to keep the glue off the acts of service) and we used a white gel pen to make thread marks on the outside.

It worked for me and possibly saved my mom’s sanity.

If you are going to hang the stars as shown …make sure that whether you sew or glue them shut that you include the end of the string in the star before you close it.

I then just randomly hung the stars on the twig tree.

I hope to do this each year as a family because

1) who needs more candy each day through December

2) who doesn’t need more times in their lives to think of others and find fun ways to show kindness

As much as I love, love, love the month of December if you are not careful it can turn into just shopping, eating too much and sugar comas.

I feel like each time we so something like this we take a huge exhale, slow down and focus.

I am thinking we will keep it up year around and have weekly acts of service.

I will let you know.

Thank you for asking about this and thank you Anne Marie for inspiring this project.

Modern Farmhouse Christmas Home Tour

We truly wait until after Thanksgiving to pull out our decorations for Christmas (and we are still pulling them out).

We will be adding to our home over the next week but today is a great start!

We are all so excited to celebrate the birth of Christ, to get ready for a new year, to intentionally choose how to spend the season and to gather for our favorite traditions.

This is our first Christmas in our new home and we love seeing our Christmas decorations in this new space.

I believe it takes years to pull your home together and we are only 9 months in. We are having the best time making this house our home and can’t wait to see how it evolves.

I am honored to once again to be a part of Jen Rizzo’s Holiday Housewalk.

This year Wayfair is sponsoring the housewalk and we are excited to have them joining us!

This whole week is such a gorgeous gathering of so many incredible bloggers as they share their homes dressed up for the holidays.

Welcome to the first day and if you are coming over from Fox Hollow Cottage I am so glad you are here.

I love to decorate simply for the holidays, shop the house, use what we have and only add a few new elements.

I have also learned over the years that perfect is never as important as the people coming through your doors and those that live under your roof.

My heart is that our home is comfortable and cozy.  I also want to be surrounded by things we enjoy and use.

Welcome to our home.

(This is our acts of service tree that we bring out and use each Christmas)

The Library and Music Room

This is the space where we listen to music but also where the children practice and play the piano.

The light in here is amazing and one of the many reason we fell in love with this home.

If you look over that railing you will down into the kid’s study area and that photo is coming up.

Our School Study Nook

This area is over the railing behind our library and we have converted it into a study area for the kids to use their laptops, do homework etc.

Our Living Room

We went to the tree farm the day after Thanksgiving and picked our three trees (our art studio art tour will be coming later this week).

We got as far as the lights and the kids said they loved it just like that. We are giving it a few days to see if they change their minds. IF they do we will be sure to share here on the blog.

I kind of agree with them.

Our Kitchen

I am just realizing that I never took wide angle images of our kitchen. You can see more image HERE and  HERE and HERE.

Our Family Room

You can see more photos of our Master Bedroom dressed up for Christmas HERE.

Thank you so much for taking a peek at our home.

Come back later this week when we share our studio dressed up for Christmas!

You have more homes to see and the next stop is Beneath My Heart!

I am excited to make the new house our home and to share it with you along the way!

Thank you so much for stopping by!

My family wishes you a Merry Christmas!

Pumpkin Pancakes and Apple Cider Syrup | Our kids LOVE these

I am pretty much addicted to anything pumpkin so when fall comes around we turn to some of our pumpkin favorites.

Pumpkin pancakes with apple cider syrup is a fall staple for as long as I can remember.

THIS is the recipe that the kids ask for on special occasions and especially during the fall.

We made ours gluten free but tweak it anyway you want to make it your own.

We hope you love them as much as we do.

We thought it would be fun to share the video of us making them from a few years back.

Isn’t Benny the cutest!

Our Fall Home

***All week we will be sharing some of our recent and past fall decor**

This is our first fall on our new land and in our home and we are loving all of the surprises.

Want to know the surprise we are loving the most right now?

We have a huge apple tree!

We had no idea because we bought our land and home in the middle of winter. I have always wanted an apple tree and this home has THREE!

We have already made apple crisp and we are making another one today.

We will have more apples than we know what do to with so friends and local horses may be getting buckets of apples delivered to their homes and stables.

Another wonderful surprise is watching how the sun comes through our windows each season. It is all so new and beautiful to us. I feel like we fall in love deeper with this home and land a thousand times a week. We also were able to walk the land and clip all of the branches and flowers that we used though out the house for the tour!

When you first walk into our home this is part of your view.

Library and Music Room

This room is one of my favorite rooms in the house because of the positioning of the space, the huge wall of windows, the light, the view into the side garden and of course the gorgeous bookcase I designed and then had built by my brother!  We love this room and how much use we get out of it.  The bookcase transformed this room and it was one of the first things we had done in the home (because how long can a girl live with her books in boxes?).

If you are interested in ordering a large gallery wrapped canvas print of my art above our piano please contact us at contact@jeanneoliverdesigns.com.

We would love to custom order one for you.

The Living Room

This room was the previous owner’s dining room but with a large kitchen table and multiple outdoor dinning spaces we thought a living room made more sense for our family.  The biggest thing we did in this space was add this fireplace that I designed. I think it feels like it was original to the home.

When we moved in we had the whole inside of the house painted (ceiling, walls, baseboards) Nano White by Behr and we changed out all of the lighting. That alone made a HUGE impact on the feel of the home.

Watch the home video tour so you can understand the flow of the house a little better (if you want).

The Kitchen

We love the beautiful levels of this home, all of the windows and the open floor plan.

The Family Room

I am only giving you a peek into this space. You will have to come back tomorrow for a special post just on the family room.

The Master Bedroom

We have never had a ranch style home before (even though nothing about this home really fits a ranch description). We are loving having our bedroom right off the living room and on the main level. We also have a fun deck off our bedroom with a hot tub that we use all throughout the winter. The stars at night out here are insane! I had forgotten how incredible the sky looks in the country at night.

The Back Deck

Off of our kitchen we have a huge deck that we are loving! It has become another room of our house and when the weather is nice you will find Kelly and I out here in the morning talking and having coffee.  You can’t see in these photos but you can see the mountains from the deck and I wish I could record the sound of the birds in the morning and the sound of the wind through the pines.  On this day that the photos were taken we were getting ready for our kids to have some friends over to celebrate the start of school.  We grilled out, placed volleyball and ate too many s’mores.

The Side Garden

This is the last stop in the tour. I loved this space from the beginning because out of our 7 acres it is the only fenced in area and I am a sucker for gates. What is a girl to do?  We have started filling the raised beds and we are working on a new cedar porch that will allow you to walk right out into the garden. My favorite part about this space has to be the view of the butte and finding one of the kids reading in the hammock.

Video Home Tour

I can’t wait to show you later some of the trails we have made throughout the woods on the land.  Better yet…I would love to have you come to one of our live workshops at our new studio here on our land.

If you love before and afters (come on…who doesn’t) come and check out the transformation of a large workshop/garage into my studio.

If you want to read all about our journey to this home and land you can read about it here, here and here.  We had no interest in moving and then here we are.

It was a year ago this month that we looked at that first home and all of the adventuring began.

Thank you for stopping over and joining me for my fall home tour!

Salt + Light | Registration Has Just Opened for Our FREE January Study!

I am so excited to announce that registration is open for our next FREE study that will begin on January 4th!

This will be our third year that we start off the New Year with a free study all about growing in our faith.

This year is Salt + Light | Impact The World Right Where You Are.

Join 18 men and women for a 4 week free online study about Salt + Light: Impact the World Right Where You Are.

This year we have a gorgeous devotional to pre-order before the workshop begins. Imagine us being that organized! HA! First time for everything!

To pre-order the beautiful devotional that has been written by Sheila Atchley and designed by Jen Wagner click HERE.

The month of January 2017 will be full of stories in how the Lord uses real people in their everyday life, using their authentic gifts to impact others.  How showing up right where you are is powerful and good enough.  Too often we can think that serving the Lord or others looks like a mission field in Africa. Sometimes it is. Many times it is in your town, at your job, with your neighbor, with your child’s best friend, with the stranger in the grocery store and even your own family.

Let’s look at our placement, our gifts and our open invitation to collaborate daily with a God that is just waiting to hear us say…

I’m In. I’m all in. Use what I have and who I am. Use my brokenness and imperfections. Use my gifts and strengths and open the box that I have placed around myself and You because I desire deeply to do, see and be more. Not the tired more. The filled back up more. The deepest desires of our hearts more. The reason we are here more!

We would love to have you join us!

Last 24 Hours to Get the Early Registration Price for Modern Bohemian Jewelry and Feel Home!

I know that one of your favorite courses that we offer on our creative network is anything with home!

Being creative and creating a comfortable and beautiful space is at the heart of many of us (and even more desire to know how).

But where do we begin?

How do we make decisions that truly reflect our heart, style, lifestyle and budget? How do design spaces today that we will be happy with tomorrow?

I am honored to share that designer Melinda McCoy of House 214 Design will take us step by step and share how she helps her clients make design choices in Feel Home: Creating a Timeless Feeling Home.

We all have the same questions when it comes to designing our homes. Where do I begin? Is this really me or am I making this decision because it is the latest trend? Am I still going to like this look six months from now? Whether you are the everyday home designer or working with a professional, the choices you make for your timeless home need to be made with intention. This course will guide you through the process and teach you the framework that I use to create a timeless home with my clients. We will create storyboards, discover the language for a timeless home (hint, it has a lot to do with your personality), and learn the exact design elements that create a timeless feeling. You will learn by doing. As a result, making design decisions for your timeless home will be easier. You will be making your decisions with intention and confidence rather than because you saw it in the latest issue of a favorite magazine. This course will teach you not just the what, but the how and why behind creating a timeless feeling home.

Feel Home is an online course with 4+ hours of content, lifetime access and it will begin November 1, 2016. The early registration price is $38.00 but that will end in 24 hours!

We are having the most fun with all of the beautiful jewelry courses that are on the site right now!

You have 24 hours to still get early registration for Modern Bohemian: Creating Wearable Works of Art with Jen Rizzo!

I was recently speaking at a conference where my good friend Jen Rizzo was also attending.

While we were there she wore the most beautiful jewelry pieces each day and I finally asked her where she got them. She told me she had made them!

She said that she had loved all of the new trends in jewelry but she couldn’t fathom paying that much for them and made all of her pieces for a fraction of what they were selling for in higher end stores.

I asked her right then if she would teach all of us how to make these gorgeous pieces! Lucky for us she said YES:-)

Explore jewelry making using natural materials. Work with wire wrapping, using odd shaped objects such as stone in your designs and create intricate closures. Using these objects and tools you will create beautiful, organic and geometric shaped works of art. We will create earrings, necklaces and bracelets and each piece will be perfect for gift going or keeping for yourself. This jewelry class is for every skill level. No previous jewelry making skills are needed.

This course is a 4+ hour of content course with lifetime* access. The early registration price is $24 and the course will begin on November 1, 2016.
